Okay, I'm really new to all this but I've been wanting to record drums for the longest time and had just recently bought mics, cables, and an audio interface to do so. I bought a Tascam US 1800 new that came w/ Cubase LE5 and im using them on my Sony VAIO laptop. I have read all the startup instructions for the Tascam and Cubase and have downloaded drivers for both already. When I go to monitor sound from my mics on my drum kit, I can see from the audio meter that the mics do pick up sound but for some reason it only lasts anywhere from 5-60 seconds give or take then drops completely. After that it doesn't pick up any audio. Also, I cant seem to hear any sound when i try using my head phones to monitor it even though the mics are picking up audio. I am completely new to cubase and using this audio interface but I have searched for possible reasons on google and no one seemed to have the same problem.

I did make sure the monitor button was on and that the punch out buttons weren't accidentally on. And all the mic cables are securely in. I also checked to see maybe if for some reason the tascam kept losing its usb connection to my laptop but the orange usb light never goes off. Needless to say, I'm at a loss. ANY help would be great. I just wanna record drums :(

I don't know if this will help but these are my laptop specs:
CPU - Intel Core i7
CPU Clock Frequency - 1.73 GHz
System Memory - 4 GBytes
Windows 7 64-bit

Is there any other usb stuff connected that could be interupting the process?

No I don't believe so. I"m gonna try those steps but unfortunately I have to go to work right now so I'll have to wait til I get back. I'll let you know if it worked or not. Thanks

No problem man. Sounds like something is just interrupting communication with the 1800. These steps should clear it up. :)

I did all the steps but the audio still keeps dropping. I tried recording to see if I could spot when it was dropping and you clearly can. And it never stops after the same amount of time. Its random. I'm going to try and test the 1800 and cubase on my friends iMac. If that doesnt work, I guess its my Tascam 1800? If so, I bought a warranty on it so i'll try taking care of that unless there if something else I could do. Man this sucks :(

Maybe wireless? Try disabling your wireless (if you have wireless).

Wow I feel so stupid. I overlooked the instruction in the startup guide for the tascam to set the "line in" as default for audio when the 1800 is on. I only did that for the tascam speakers but not line in so when i turned on the tascam, it only recognized it for a few seconds then went back to my laptop speakers as its default audio setting.... well all that matters now is that I can finally record! AWESOME! Thanks for your help anyways Tetrafish and jimmy. I was getting scared here for a minute.

I've learned to never skim haha. I've had many experiences quite like that.
