Hi everyone,

I am sorry if this has been asked already :)

I am a DJ and have began producing Trance music. Right now I have a HiFi hooked up to mac for music and it sounds awful when mixing music and producing stuff.

So I have decided it is time for a set of monitor. I am looking to spend anything between £300-400 right now.

I have been looking at KRKs because they seem to be the industry standard for DJs right now, but if I am being honest, I have found that they can't take a good bounding, and I would want something more powerful.

What would you guys suggest?

I have a really good Sanyo HiFi amp, could I use that and hook passive monitors to them, or will the amp alter the sound?

Thanks,
Peter

My little brother is Mat Zo. He was using KRK monitors in his studio for a while, but then I think he switched to something else for the same reason, though I can't remember what he switched to. You could probably ask him on Twitter. He might be relieved to have a technical question.

Rockit 10-3's might be a little high for your price range, but they run 140w each (per channel). Can't say I'd like to put more than that in my ears at 3'.
Rockit 8 & Yamaha 8's are 70w, just for reference...

I was looking at Yamaha's actually. I know their PA stuff is reliable, and I know of studios who use their stuff (obviously more suitable and professional ones).

I will be shopping around and listening around I think.

The Yama 8s run 120w BTW (My bad). That's not much different than the 10-3s and you can get them in black OR white! :D

KRK Rokit 6 G2's were my first set and I really learned how to critically listen on them.
Since then I've upgraded to the Focal CMS65 and CMS40 pairs so I've been able to compare them with high end monitors. I'm not going to lie and say the Focals aren't miles ahead of them, because they are - but they're also hundreds of dollars more. In comparison the frequency response feels a little veiled in the low end, but I wouldn't call it hyped. And the soundstage and stereo imaging on the Focal's is improved because of that inverted tweeter, but as long as you're in the sweetspot of the Rokits you're fine.
Honestly I think the KRKs hold up really well. Granted that could just be because I've "learned" them. I still have mine and plan on setting them up again as a reference when I have money to buy some new stands.

The G3s are out now and I'm sure they've improved a lot. EDIT: My friend Bandesnaci has the G3 6's and says they're great

With that said - Focal has just announced a new line of entry level monitors (5 inch, 6 inch, and 8 inch), they're pretty big BUT I'm sure they sound excellent - and they have that inverted tweeter... I don't need them but I definitely want them lol at least to compare. Focal Alpha 50 | Sweetwater.com
