Last Novemeber, I replaced the carpet in my house's entry and hallway, and the linoleum in the kitchen and bath, with 20" x 20" porcelain tile.

It made the house waaay louder. The master bedroom is at the end of the hall and sound from the rest of the house funnels down the corridor to the bedroom. Not cool when the fam is awake and I want to sleep.

Anything I can do besides a popcorn ceiling that will be acceptable to a female with an eye for interior design, that will actually help quiet the house down? Meaning I can't hang auralex or moving blankets on the walls.

Ripping the tile out of the hallway is a viable option at this point.

Assuming your last sentence was typed correctly, I'd say that's your best option. Popcorn ceiling will do diddly. Carpet on the hall floor will help a bit - but it's not going to do anything to change the 'loudness' of the other rooms that will be adding to the sound transmitted down the hall.

Any chance of letting the significant other do some decorating in those 2 other rooms with some nice cloth wall hangings to at least help a little bit?

Honestly, she could staple bass traps and Auralex to every square inch of the house and I'd be cool with it. I'd be happy living in a cardboard box if there wasn't a female in the equation.:D

Area rugs. Also wall hangings (I have my daughters canvas art on my walls and it helped alot). A regular picture, wouldnt do. What the hell are they called, tapestries? You know carpet you hang on the wall :)

Exactly on the tapestries.

The canvas pics over a wood frame opens the option to stuff the cavity behind it and never know it's there.

Take her over to the local craft shop and let her pick up a few things.

She does merchandising resets for books and mags at Michaels 4 days a week.

Removing the carpet probably left some extra space under your bedroom door. See what you can do to seal that up and at least you can sleep in quiet.

Actually, the bedroom is still carpeted and the carpet extends to just before the door, so that ain't an issue. I was thinking a solid core door would help. I may need to change the jamb, or at least add a third hinge to support the added weight, though.

Thanks for all the tips.

Yep a solid door will help...a lot! Adding an extra hinge is not a bid deal. A seal around the door will help too.

I had no idea what abatement meant. So I looked it up.

One definition is this, but I don't think it's what you are talking about:

suspension: an interruption in the intensity or amount of something

I think this is probably the definition that is closest to what you're talking about:

An abatement, in heraldry, is a modification of the shield or coat of arms that supposedly can be imposed by authority (in England supposedly by the Court of Chivalry) for misconduct. ...

So, "Non-Studio Sound Coat Of Arms" doesn't make much sense to me and therefor I think the whole thread is kind of confusing.

But then you were clever enough to look into 'sound abatement', and it all came together in your mind, and you realized that just because you hadn't heard the term before, didn't mean it was worded incorrectly.

And that is what makes you so smart!
