Non-Mogami MXL-V69?

I've been listening to a lot of LDCs lately, trying to figure what sounds good to my tastes for my voice, and am finding that I really love the sound of tube microphones.
That led me to checking out the MXL-V69, which is invariably sold in the Mogami edition, with case, Mogami cables, power supply, mount, etc. Is there now (or has there ever been) a non-Mogami edition? Is the Mogami product much superior if the alternative exists? While it appears to be a tremendous value for the price to my ears, does one pay a premium for the package vs. a la carte?
Also, to go slightly OT, would a tube pre-amp impart that same type of sound quality with a standard mic that a tube mic gives? All other things being equal?

Try the new MXL960...

...If you're impressed by the V69M but want to save a few bucks, go to the

mxlmics.com website

...click on condenser mics, then 900 series...check out the new MXL960 Mogami Edition Tube Mic...Musicians Friend has got it on a promo for $199. w/free shipping...I just got one and it's real smooth sounding...slightly different than the V69M but on par...Best $200. you'll spend on a mic (with a tube!)...

I believe there was a non-Mogami V69 but it's been discontinued for awhile. Maybe eBay? I have the V69M and I think it's a great mic.

Yeah, kidvybes, that new V690 does look nice.

Have been looking over the threads on that new MXL960 - looks verrrry promising! Of course, could be bait and switch, so I'll have to hear for myself.....but right now, I got the 'I want it real bads'....real bad!
Thanks for the heads-up!

I got mine...

I already bought, received and tested mine...no problem with MF (No Bait & Switch here!)...and free shipping...don't wait...by the way, this mic is 20% larger than the V69M...it's very well made (heavy and solid!)...it requires a Neumann style mount (available seperately...or you can use the Joe Meek, Samson, etc... which all interchange easily)...the tube is easily removed for upgrade, although I had the tube from mine tested and the tech told me it was an excellent 12at7 (matched triodes & very low microphonics & very strong gain!) so no real need to upgrade...when you look at what you get for $199 (nice road case, power supply, mogami quality cables) it's a no-brainer...I hope to hear feedback from some of you guys when you get yours...Good Luck!

When MXL bought out Mogami they got two things. First a direct source for high quality cable, and second a great marketing hook. Mostly the second.

What cable were they using beforehand? Was it really that bad?

Besides, does Mognami have their own copper ore mines? Smelters? Wire drawing machines? or even, whatever the equipment that covers the wire with insulation? (Interesting question there...how is that done?). I would guess that Mogami just buys the best quality cable available from manufacturers and packages and distributes it with their brand. In other words MXL most likely could have bought the same stuff before the deal, its just that they could not use the Mognami name.

sorry ....flashback to old camera sales days....a cynical twitch :-(
No disrespect intended to any retailer or manufacturer implied....
.....aaaaugh...I'm gonna get flamed, but I saw a nauseating amount of it with cameras and would never be a party to it......but for the record:
a)retailers who would advertise brand name & try to switch you in-store to their higher-profit margin stuff - whether it's best for you the buyer or not
b)manufacturers who release the worst low-end knockoffs trading on the name value of their pro gear
I think it's an abominable thing, and did not mean to paint any (or all) industries with a broad brush, but a cynic's just a burned romantic, eh?

Oh, were you saying it might be a crappy knock-off of the V69?

A little clarification. Len Marshall of Marshall Electronics owns Mogami Cable Company; he also owns MXL Microphone Company. The V69 originally came out with the Mogami wiring in it.

Harvey...what have you heard?...

Mr. Gerst will verify the V77's quality...have you any info yet on the 960 tube mic?...

My son Alex is at NAMM - I asked him to go by and check out both Studio Projects and MXL.

Thanks for making it clearer. My point was that before the common ownership connection MXL may have been using exactly the same quality cable, it is just that they did not have the right to say that it was Mogami.
