Non GM Synth --- any mapping stagedies ?

I have a Roland D-70, which can play midi from PC. However, it is not GM midi. I have to modify the patch numbers.
I also don't want to rely on my Soundblaster. Some sounds are OK, and piano's are horrendous. Drums are OK.

I am not sure whether it is possible
Play a GM midi file and re-map program number to the D-70 patches / performances, without re-editing the midi for patch number.
Is there PC software that can do this (sits on the middle between sequencer and midi out of PC) ?
Something along the lines of a conversion table, that I could at least maintain.

Any assistance / advice / links etc. would be appreciated.

I sold D-70's back in the day, and remember them having a fairly good piano sound. I would recommend you use the D-70 piano instead of the 'horrendous' soundblaster sample.

Also, try this; it's called MidiOX and should be part of any tool kit for those working with computers and midi.

The Microsoft MIDI Mapper exists for this very purpose.

1) ALCHUCK - I use the MIDI Mapper. Channel 1 to 5 = D-70, 6 to 16 = Soundblaster. D-70 is NOT GM,
So, if I want to play a midi, I have to reset mapper back to default and play on the SB, unless I want to edit the midi before playing.
Maybe "convert" MIDI instrument number to D-70 patch number, rather than MAP would be a better term. Thanks for the advice.
Unless I'm missing something, can the midi mapper translate / convert midi program 1 = grand piano to "patch X" on a non GM synth ?

2) ssscientist - I will follow-up on the MIDI OX.
