I was just playing around with an acoustic guitar effects box as a headphone preamp, using an AT 3035 to mic the guitar. Lots of distortion, as the box couldn't drive my headphones very well. So I patched it all through the MR8, to drive the headphones. Still didn't drive them very well, so I ran the signal out of the MR8 and into a stereo, letting it drive the headphones. The distortion was gone, but with the higher gain from the stereo, I noticed some serious noise--high static, not completely uniform, with no MR8 effects on. It persisted with the mic unplugged. So I took the MR8 out of the loop but kept everything else the same, running the mic through an M-Audio Buddy to the effects box to a stereo amplifier to the headphones. Almost complete silence resulted-just a little noise from the AT mic, which is very quiet.
So tell me, is this noise because the MR8 is translating the signal to digital and back again, or are they just bad preamps in the MR8(or both!). Whatever the cause, how much higher up the food chain do I have to go to clean up this noise (and what I think is general muddiness in the sound)? In particular, I'm itching to pull the trigger on a Yamaha AW16 purchase. This is the Fostex forum, I know, but I'd stll appreicate hearing from those in a postion to comment. Thanks! EJ
