I live in an apartment in a very busy section of New York. It seems as though most of the street noise is coming in through the window facing the street. I think if stop that somehow I will considerably lower the amount of noise in the room. any suggestions? will towels work or is there any material i can use? i do mostly projects for school and occasionally record demos for other musicians, so i don't need the room silence, i just need to cut down on the noise.

I would board it up. and stick to using dynamic mics.

You could board it up and put some form of insulation between the window and board, rigid fiberglass with the reflective backing will help in absorption and reflection of the outside noise.
