Noisy amp

Two problems I'm having with recording an electric guitar through an amp:

One, there's a lot of buzzing. Not so much hiss, but a real electrical buzzing sound. Originally I had it hooked up in my basement and when I moved the guitar around the buzzing changed. I assume when the pickups are perpendicular to whatever is generating that noise, then it doesn't show up. However, I brought the amp upstairs and it was noisy no matter what I did with the guitar.

Second, I ran the guitar through my effects processor and then into the amp and suddenly I was picking up a radio station. You can imagine I don't want that on my recording either.

So, what can I do to eliminate amp noise? I'm not sure if I can do this, but if my amp has an out should I run it straight into my computer (I'm using an aardvark Q10). Is it a flaw in the amp or guitar, or do I just need to take certain measures to eliminate it?

i say figure out what station you're picking up and then call and ask the station to stop broadcasting while you're trying to record.

i dunno for sure about the noise, but the radiostation thing has been convered multiple times recently. i would tell you what advice was given, but i dont remember. i think some of the noise can be gotten rid of by putting some kind of shielding inside the guitar. i dont really remember.

Instrument cables are unbalanced, so basically, they are long antannae. This is just the nature of unbalanced cables. First thing you should do shorten your cable as much as possible. If youre using a 20 foot cable into your effects, and another 20 feet going from the effects to the amp, you have a 40 foot radio antenna. Thats not good. Put your effects into your amp via a short patch cable and don't have more then a 10 ft long cord comming from your guitar. Humbucker pickups can help this a little too. If everything else fails, gate the noise out! Its real easy to do on most recording software. Don't gate to tape though. -Joe
