I have recorded before using the exact same set up and everything was fine. Now everytime i go to record my acoustic guitar i have to turn the level right up on my souncard to get any signal. I also sometimes get an interference signal and when i play back the track there is a lot of hiss because i have recorded with the level on the sound card so high (which i didnt have to do before) my XLR lead is new. Can anybody help?

More information.

You're not plugging a mic-level signal into a line-level input, are you...?

What sort of "sound card?" Stock? Ain't gonna happen.

In any case, more information.

Nice card according to the reviews.
I did find this though:
the sound of the unit is great, and the card bus is cool too.... the problem is that the ethernet cable that connects the card bus to the breakout box (yes, they used an ethernet cable) is (predictably) LOOSE in its socket, so every time you so much as touch the cable the sound cracks pops and lags
I think Massive Master is quite correct, by the way.
I can't see the mic/line switch but I'm guessing it's in the wrong position.
my XLR lead is new
That's XLR on both ends, right?
New cables can be buggered too, you know.
Hey! 65dB of Gain. Nice!

besides the cable did anything else change? (including the room, including anything that might have change with regard to computer, is it attached to internet, etc.?)

what mic?

when you attach that mic to a different audio card on a different system do you get same results?

do you have an acquaintance who could loan you a portable (USB/firewire) audio card and see if you get same or different results on your computer with a different card.

an intractable, if not infinite, number of variables. need to isolate at least some of the usual suspects
