noise, recording, mics

I'm using a Shure SM57 with a Roland VS-840EX workstation. But, I get a lot of noise while the mic is ready for rec.
What do I have to be sure about before I record with these instruments? What's the source of the noise I get? Do I have to buy some transformers, another type of mic, cable?
I'm driving nuts so help me out ok?!!

Sounds to me like you need something to get the level of your mic up higher before it gets to the input on your 840,maybe a mic preamp like the ART or Joe Meek.Cheers!
