Noise Gate in Logic Express

When I record vocals in logic (with a tascam us-122) I have some background noise I want to get rid off. I read that I sould use a noise gate, but when I do, it also cuts away the vocals. Not all of the vocals but more than enough to bug me.

How can I handle this best? Cause I've been sliding faders and turning nobs a lot, but I can't get the correct settings...

Use a lighter ratio, don't attenuate as deep, and use a slightly slower attack and release. (It would be called expansion then).
Better yet, clean up the signal to noise issues so you won't have to bother with it.
