I am putting my vocal through a ZOOM RFX 1000 and then direct into a Yamaha MD4s. It still produces residual noise. The ZOOM has a compressor/limiter setting on it but this seems to have little effect.
The same happens if I try to feed my guitar through it.
One way of reducing it is to cut the mid on the MD4s mixer to 0, but this then makes the sound muffled when I bring it back up after recording.
The question is do I need a seperate preamp, compressor etc, or am I doing something wrong? Do I desperately need any other equipment to compensate?
Hey I am not a technician.......I just play the guitar!
Any help will be recieved gratefully.

YO Bert: [How's Ernie?]

Noise, noise, or not to noise? A little play on Shakespeare. [very little]

I would ask you to try this: delete the compressor. Unplug it.

# two: Get an 8 track recorder, LATER.

Don't bounce any tracks.

Now, where is the noise coming from?

I don't know. But, noise comes with almost any type of operation, unless you are in the very high end gear, or you have the knowledge of Ed, or some of the other guys, like Bruce, V.

But, a good mic pre going into your recorder, even if it is a 4 tracker, will help.

A good knowledge of FX and mixing....hey, it only comes with practice, practice, practice, and many errors, errors, errors.

I guess compressors do something for some people; however, I used one for a while;; all it did was add noise and it did not add to sonic quality. I'm just a rookie so please, guys, don't jump on me.

The fewer wires and in/outs you use to get what you want will give you more of what you want.

Bert - your setup should work OK provided you understand how it all works.

Firstly I would set the Mix control anticlockwise so there is no effects or reverb. Set the input control so that the -6db led flashes. Now set the input control on your MD4 to anticlockwise so it is ready to accept a line level feed. Put you slide fader to zero.(3/4's up)

Now adjust the output contol of your ZOOM RFX 1000 so that you get a good reading on your MD4.

You should not get any noise with this setup. You have also bypassed any of the FX. If you want some reverb on your vox mike select Reverb with the Bank selection switch. You can then select which type of reverb you want using the effect type rotary pot.

Now using the wet/mix control you can add the reverb by turning the control clockwise. The length of the reverb is controlled by the reverb time control (fully clockwise being the longest and anti clockwise being the shortest.

If you need more info get the manual from

as I did
