Guinea Pig
Hi guys,

Basically i have Cubase SE, and ive just installed it etc for my home set up. Ive attached everything up to it and set it all up to play, but i have no sound when playing MIDI. I have signal going in and out, and when i record, i can see thats its recorded on the screen, but i have no sound.

I know its probably something really dumb, thats why i dont want to play around with it for HOURS and then find out its something so simple, any ideas?

Cheers people,

Peace

Just tried recording a quick guitar riff, and thats worked fine, so its just MIDI that i have no sound with...

Open Setup MME in Cubase Program Group. Make sure your device (i.e. SB16 MIDI Out or similar for Sound Blaster 16, AWE and TBS Pro External MIDI Out 1 for Fiji or Pinnacle) is active.

Hi,

Ive already checked that, and its active. Thats whats confused me..

Check your cables and make sure you have MIDI In to MIDI Out and MIDI Out to MIDI In.

Another thing to try is checking your play control. Double click the speaker in the lower right corner of your screen and choose options/properties and make sure midi is checked for playback.

All thats correct, i have the following set up:

Yamaha PSR740 connected to Mac using a 3way MIDI >USB connector
MIDI out is in MIDI in and vice versa. MIDI Through is not being used due to me not using an external hardware device. Im 99% sure its all set up correctly, and i think Cubase getting signal and recording it all proves that. It even has signal coming out, so i just dont understand why i cant hear it. the speakers do work, have tested them.... Hmm..Thought of something whilst writing this...My Speakers are hooked up to my sound card via the RCA Connections. However, my MIDI Keyboard is connected via USB so therefore isnt going directly through the sound card. If i put my preferences to be my speakers, would it still work correctly? It should do...do you think this could be the part thats wrong?

Ok,

i have just fiddled around with the settings, and now i do have sound, but its not coming out of my monitors, its coming out of my keyboards speakers!! I seem to have trouble with the most simplest things at the moment!!!

Any ideas? Advice is highly appreciated by the way :)

That's because your keyboard is acting as the sound module and it's output is it's own speakers.
You can patch the audio out of the keyboard to inputs of your soundcard to monitor (via Cubase or any direct hardware monitoring your soundcard offers) and/or record the audio output of the Yamaha.
Other than that, with just the MIDI connection to your computer, the only other way I can think that you would get sounds would be if you used the keyboard to trigger a soft-syth/VSTi.

midi vs. audio...

Midi has nothing to do with your audio signal. Your instrument needs to have it's audio output sent to some form of monitor speakers. If you can connect your keyboard to the inputs on your sound card, you will work. If you use your keyboard as a controller only and send midi to a track assinged to a virtual pluggin instrument/sound, you should be able to get sound from your sound card speakers. You could test this with the built in free pluggins in cubase.... Let me know if that's confusing, you can fix your problem easily with the right setup and have some more flexibility. As a musician I can relate to the setup problems, I had alot of the same issues to figure out. It really does all work in the end....

I thought i had sent the keyboard to the monitor speakers.. I will be purchasing a simple MIDI cable so i can connect it to my sound card via the midi connectors. I have the USB>MIDI cable because of when i had my PC and had to use the USB for it. Ill give it a go and hopefully it should work.

Now all i have to work out is why my speakers are hissing and crackling all the time!! The joy :o :o :o

Thanks for the help people!

Peace
