What Pro Tools *****?
This song has too many tracks for its own good. I am not sure where to start.

Any advice good or bad would be greatly loved and appreciated:

Could be a great song, but needs a lot of depth and sparkle injected into it. Right now, it sounds like its behind a curtain and lacks depth.

I can't be bothered. If it's already a "smash hit" then critiquing it now is a moot point, yes?

Get back to me when your ability matches your ego.

Dude, it's a joke!!!! :P

Just trying to be funny!!!! Really.

Advice? It needs to be EQ'd and mixed on a good set of ears and studio monitors.

I have the good studio monitors but I guess not the ears. :)

Back to the drawing board...

Is this something that can be fixed with professional mastering or am I WAY WAY WAY off?

Its not a total loss or anything. I mean, ideally, you wouldnt have to EQ it a whole lot, but its not beyond repair by someone experienced who can remix and master it for you.
What program did u use to mix it?

It was originally recorded in Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 and tonight we brought it over to my new Mbox2 setup with Pro Tools LE. The vocals and bass were re-recorded tonight with the Mbox 2. The guitars were all done on Cakewalk. I have a decent pair of Yamaha HS80M monitors. So, I can hear what's going on, maybe I'm deaf, or too close to the project.

Good advice is to listen to something (a good, professional, commercial release) you know sounds really great, then immediately halfway thru the song, play this one and note the differences.

The distorted guitars could have a little more edge to them...and just depth. That's pretty much what my newb ears hear...just my .02

Modern Life is Rubbish

This is not meant to insult at all--I dig this track for several reasons, but I'm pushed to ask a question, or at least, offer a subjective observation.

I've noticed in my (limited) listening to a lot of these new modern rock bands, that all of a sudden--and i mean all of a sudden as in like, the last five or ten years or so--is that a lot of these bands are suddenly having a very similar sound when it comes to vocals. It really has nothing to do with the way it's recorded, it's intonation, the way the words are pronounced etc. I'm tempted to say Emo, but I don't know, and never really knew, what the f that word means. But the thing about these bands is that the music underneath the lyrics is usally really tight, has a good sound to it, and is pretty interesting musically. But the vocal "sound", not the melodies and the lyrics, make it feel sort of cheapened and more generic.

Anyone else have this feeling? Or am I generalizing too much? Perhaps I just listen to different stuff--but I do think that there's something to this...

Well, my singer definitely has some emo influences, so you're probably right. But, we are all in our early 30s, so that's interesting to me... We're definitely not kids doing emo. Thanks for the comments!! :) :) :D

My first impression is that...
- the bass guitar is a bit boomy
- the guitars could use some high mids ? to get definition
- the vocals are in a good place but might also do with a bit of sparkle - highs...

It's a relatively even mix just need to open it up with some highs...IMHO.....

Good song too...catchy and upbeat.....I'd dig this in a live setting too..

My two cents....

I've never been a fan of super-wide guitar panning, but it works here...

The drums don't seem quite present enough to me. Maybe bring drums up a hair overall, and maybe boost the highs a little in the overheads somewhere in the 7-8kHz range...

Vox could use a tad more 'verb maybe...

The mix in general is more there than not, though. The tracking itself seems to have been done pretty well and that's more than half the battle right there.

I really like the song! Good lyrics, catchy melodies and hooks. Well done!
