Hey I'm havin trouble getting playback for my midi. When we plug my korg kontrol 49 into my friends mac, he opens up garage band and we can play on teh keyboard and hear the sounds back through his mac speakers, but when I plug it into my PC(win 7 64bit) and load up cubase, I can see that the keyboard is being detected, the signal moves when I press keys etc, and when I record the midi is being recorded, but playing it back doesn't seem to do anything?

I've been looking around and can't find any help for this, when I click Device->Device Setup-> I have no options for All Midi Ports, just Midi Port Setup

Anyone have any idea whats going on?

I've installed the Korg Kontrol 49 Win 7 64 bit drivers so I'm a bit confused right now(new to the whole recording world)

Thanks

George

maybe this is it:

It sounds like the MIDI info is playing but it's not hooked up to anything. You need to hook it up to something like a VST instrument. Try going up to the Help menu in Cubase, and select Cubase LE help and search and read about VST instruments.

You need to assign a VST instrument to the track you're on or you won't hear anything. Once you do that you can save the song as a default and it will be there every time you load
Cubase, like it was on Garageband.

Alternately you could hook up a MIDI module or keyboard. Either way, there needs to be a sound source.

Strange, I tried to look at the help files in Cubase but they wont load ~_~

About a minute into this video : http://www.maketunes.com/articles/cubase-tutorial-video-audio-midi-setup

They mention selecting the All Midi inputs, but I don't have that in my device set up thing?

here's what I got.

Midi
- MIDI PORT SETUP
Video
- VIDEO PLAYER
VST Audio System
- ASIO DIRECTX FULL DUPLEX DRIVER
VST System Link

according to that video, I'm missing a ton of stuff but have no idea how to get it into my cubase? When I installed Cubase I didn't encounter any problems.

Incase you are wondeirng I am using a legitimate copy of Cubase that I got when I purchased an Alesis USB Mixer 2.0 about a year ago.

You know what, I just had the same problem...

Try seeing if the manuals are on the original Cubase CD.

My gut feeling is that you're almost there and you just need to assign a virtual instrument to the track. I've done it before but it's been awhile. I don't normally use that version of Cubase. Try and see if the manual pdf's are on that disc.

I just found the manuals. On the "Getting Started" pdf there's a tutorial on setting up a Virtual Instrument.

If, when you play your piano keyboard, the "in" lights light on Cubase (down at the bottom on the right side of the transport) and you can record some stuff when you press record and hit some keys, then you probably just need to assign a virtual instrument. The ones on Cubase LE aren't great, but it's a place to start.
