King of Bling
I just thought that was a funny thread title.

Ok, in the past week, I posted the same song here. I replaced the fake drums with real ones, and I muddied up the vocal, LOL.

So here it is for anybody who asked to hear the updated version.

(sorry for posting a new thread...I gave up on looking for the other one.

Other than DAMN that's some nice work mate :) Both musically and production-wise. How did you get that guitar sound?

The acoustics are double tracked with an MXL v67 (cheap) and recorded through a soundblaster (cheaper) into my tracking software. I mic acoustics a lot closer than anybody ever recommends...so I have to pull a little bit (or a lot) of mud out. Then I just slap reverb on it.

The electrics....well, I'm sure you were talking about the acoustics, LOL.

Hey thanks for listening man.

Wow, didn't see that coming :)
Anyway, great job! You must have used a very good guitar, right?

I like it ok for recording. It's just a Larrivee D-03 with a rosewood back. It's pretty boomy, and I just dig that sound.

You did all this with a soundblaster?

Except the drums, yeah. I know, I know, lol. Maybe Christmas allows me an upgrade.

Thanks for listening.

Holy crap! That's really, really good.

What did you use for vocals (mic and pre)?

Goes to show you what talent can do, even without the equipment!

Only thing I can think is that the drums sound kind of weak/anemic. Don't know if it's necessarily a big thing or my preferences.

I like how you mixed it to just center it on the vocals. You can't really take your ears off them. Exactly how it should be done. Of course, if you've got a phenomenal singer, you can do that.

Keep it up!

The same MXL v67 mic, through an M-Audio DMP3 pre, and of course, I couldn't get that quality hissing without the Soundblaster, lol. I actually made it worse by overcompressing her vocal. I'm gonna' try to fix that hyper-brittle sound in the future. Thanks for listening.

That's a panning joke, right? lol. Thanks for listening both of you.

Holy Sh* t that some kick ass sound... especially the vocals....can you share your EQ on the vocals and compression? The vocal is so bright...whats the secret?

Another cracker from Chris and his vunderkid ... I haven't actually listened to it yet, but I know it'll be great.

Ooooh, it's just started ... yeah, those guitars are great. So are the drums. The vocal .... well, you already pointed out the problems with the vocal ... sounds like you have one of those old TVs that makes a crazy high-pitched whine switched on behind Jaimee's head. :) Only really sticks out on the quiet parts, like at the start though.

Great song dude, still does my head in that you can do with the gear you have. :p

Nik

Another great tune. Boy, you can sure write 'em. Great sound. These were'nt comments, just thinking out loud. :D

I checked out your web site some time back and was impressed with the feedback you received. Now that I've listened to this tune I'm REALLY impressed by Jaimee's vocals, the playing and the recording. Although my humble ears may have missed some of the hiss (hey that rhymes lol) I thought that was one of the best recordings/performances/songs I have heard on this board. Great job ! :D Not a comment, just an opinion.

Okay, for your next challenge, we'll replace the MXL67's with the mics pulled out of old Radio Shack cassette decks, and make you record into an Atari game system.

You'll have to figure out how to get the pong sound out of the background, but I'm positive you'll STILL blow us all away.

:D

I've heard this many times ... great work-

Kev-

I see a movie.... small Alabama town.... Crooked sheriff... smugglin' drugs to Nashville... Chuck Norris... No! Vin Diesel! And the Rock! Together! Half brothers! With Goldberg as the Sheriff!... Jaime Foxx is the Evil Druglord/Pimp/Terrorist! Twist:Foxx and Goldberg share father! Foxx and Diesel share mother! The Rock an FBI half-Clone! Swampboats! ATV's! Big guns! Chris Rock as Gov.! We just need that song! (And a deal with a studio...) OOOOO! Chuck Norris is the crusty, old gun dealer/secret Ninja who saves the brothers at the climax! I'll have my people call, ummm, some people....

Sounds GREAT!
Wish I could tweak my system to record thru my SoundBlaster Live! Terrible latency!!
Anyway......love the song!! Great recording and mixing!
I bet that is Jwoo10 on drums!

Nice work indeed, I won't mention the drums because you filled us in there already!

Excellent! .............Excellent!

Around the 3:20 mark I was expecting the electric to take over with some very nice, sweet melodic guitar line, I felt a build up coming on and the opposite happened!

Still, I wish I had a vocalist with that talent to work with, Nice guitar playing too, very sweet indeed!

:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

I really had to compress her vocal a lot more than I like for this tune. The vocal is double tracked throughout the song...I take the 2nd track (whichever one I like less), and I compress it at like a ration of 12:1 with a threshold of -30db or something ridiculous...The attack and release times are whatever come with a "vocal squisher" preset, lol.

I usually boost her vocal in ther 12K region (hiss region) about half an octave wide and maybe 3 or 4 db's. I also tend to cut some of the warmth in her vocal by subtracting out some stuff between 100Hz and 400Hz...pretty wide, but not too deep...just keeps the vocal from clashing with the guitar.

thanks for listening and asking.

Hey thanks, but we didn't write this one...it's by an artist named Mindy Smith, and we both just like the tune, and I needed to try recording on my laptop. Again, thanks for listening.

ido1957 - thanks a ton for listening and commenting.

K-dub - the atari thing cracked me up. You're very generous with your time and talent, and I appreciate it a lot.

lbanks - PUT DOWN THE PIPE, lol. That was really funny and kinda' spot on at the same time. Thanks for listening.

Damn straight it is, lol. I really like that guy...not just as a drummer, but he's just a standup guy too.

gordy - sounds like you have a talent for arranging...I really appreciate the comments and the listen, and I probably won't stop screwing around with this mix for at least 6 months, lol.

Again, thanks everybody...sorry to bump this, but I also didn't wanna' just ignore all the helpful comments.

I hate you. I actually, physically have a biological hatred for you. Through a soundblaster. Pshhhhhh....

Seriously, though, excellent, excellent job. Sounds great. I too wanted to hear a sweet guitar line come in @ 3:20, but I still like what you did with it there. I also really like at the end how when it is just the vocals, the reverb/instruments drop out and it sounds very intimate. Excellent job, man, incredible.

I still hate you. :D :D :D :D
