Hello everybody!

I want to start recording. My friend here is an AMD 4000+ w/ 1GB RAM (mounted on an ASUS A8VE-SE) home-built box. What I need is advice on a card (PCI) I can buy. What I want to do is:

-Recording my guitar and voice (not at the same time though)
-Recording my MIDI kb
-Have a decent mix.

To complicate things, I'm on an evil budget and I really don't know where to start.

Any help would be appreciated.

My only advice would be to not spend over about $100 or so on a PCI card. If you can get something that will suit your needs for under $100 in PCI, go for it. If it will cost much more than that, don't go with a legacy standard like PCI. Get a FireWire card and buy a FireWire-based interface. It will cost more, but in terms of long-term usability, FireWire is a much better investment than PCI at this point, since FireWire is still going strong, while parallel PCI is on its way out.

Just my $0.02.

M-Audio Firewire 410

Thanks for the reply, dgatwood!

So what do you people think about the M-Audio Firewire 410? Is it a good card?
Also, I would like to know what kind of Firewire port I need. I found PCI cards with IEEE 1394 (or something similar) ports, but I don't know if that's what I need.

Cheers and Happy New Year again!
:)
