Hi as you can see I'm quite the grunge fan especialy for Nirvana. Well here is my sytuation We will be recording an pretty serious demo and have pretty much the stock to make it. We are able to record guitar, bass and vocals anytime we want but we will be limited in time for the drums. The reason we are limited is that we will be reting some quality mics to have a ground sound for the drums. I've also been listening to nirvana latly and noticed how good the drums sounded and much the sound would fit great whit our compositions so I'm asking does anyone here have some good tricks to make a great sound like that. I will be using professional drum mics and pretty good drum (not the best but defenitly not the worst) and I will also have an effect processor and pro tools to mix. Thanks in advance :)

Tune 'em fairly low, hit 'em hard and compress the hell out of it!!

if you told people what record you were listening to, it would probably help. every cd had different sounds.

You know! The new one. From about 13 years ago!

Nevermind was released in 1991 - Is that the one you mean?

if he's talking about good drum sounds it almost has to be inutero, but it could be nevermind. in my opinion bleach and incesticide don't really have any drum sounds that are really worth trying to achieve. not that they weren't good records or good recordings. i just don't the the sounds on those 2 were anything special.

For starters, work on your grammar and spelling. Then apply your new found logic to recording.

Burn! But seriously, you gotta hit HARD. Have you seen Dave Grohl play?

And yes, it must be In Utero that he's talking about. Steve Albini, ladies and gentlemen... (er, just gentlemen. Are there any ladies on here? Ever?)

In Utero was indeed produced by Steve Albini, he's well known for that drum sound. Might be worth searching the web for his techniques, i know sometimes he just uses 1 mic on the kick and 2 overheads, and then a bunch of room mics. Listen to Shellac (Albini's band) for more of that method of drum engineering.

Nevermind's drum sound is a bit closer but was recorded in a pretty big live room by Butch Vig, what sort of space will you be recording the drums in?

I think Albini used PZM mics on the walls. Lots of them!!

If there would be they would just try to sound like gents :D not fair eh ;) , Oh if you spot one,let us all know. She may be into gear as well who knows?

Abig part of Grohl's drum sound was his cymbals. You need fairly thin, washy sounding plates. Especially your ride cymbal! I have a 19" dark K Zildjian crash that has that washy ride sound.
You can change the sound of drums pretty easy but U have to choose your cymbals very carefully.

Sorry I forgot to say wich songs had the sond I liked. Well does anyone here know some of the nirvana rareties or has the new nirvana cover that has 4 cd in. Well in the dvd there a rather different version of in bloom that has very strong drums in it I thought that was the best drum sound I ever heard. But there are also a lot of song having a very simillaire sound that sound BIG. I can see you say that having a loud drummer helps and I'm totally ok with that but is there something more that using lot of compression and low eq boost. Isn't there a rather excessive amout of reverb or something ? thanks for you're replies and sorry for my english.

Oh and also the song marygold has a rather good drum sound for those who know this song

Albini used 24 mics on the drums when he recorded Nirvana.....
I read that in a magazine so I dont know how true that is
