Hi,

I haven't been on this site in about 2 years as I have been quite happy with my home recording setup until lately.

I recently read that Trent Reznor recorded the vast majority of the upcoming NIN album on his laptop in various hotel rooms while he was on tour.

Now, first of all, if anyone has any information on his setup, it would be much appreciated.

Secondly, I was under the impression (which now may be old school) that laptop recording was not the way to go. Have there been major improvements in this area? Someone please explain because if the trend has shifted to laptop recording being more or equally feasible, this is certainly something I would like to explore.

Thanks.

eh, Destiny's Child's Writings on The Wall, was partially recorded in their hotel room while they were almost naked. Which were on a Mbox, mic & pro tools setup on the notebook. Which then was taken back to the studio (here in Los Colinas), and mixed down. Recording with a laptop has been done in hotel rooms many many times by artists however is not recommended by producers, engineers, etc. HOWEVER I wouldn't mind seeing any of them naked (destiny's child)

I would imagine that, between the more powerful laptops that are available today, and the wide availibility of Firewire audio interfaces, laptop based recording should be much more feasible for all but the extreme track count/plugin/VSTI user.

Yup. If you have a properly configured laptop, you can do pretty much anything you could do on a destop nowadays. Laptops used to be underpowered because of battery life and heat, but newer processors have changed that quite a bit.

Also, keep in mind that most acts you hear about recording in hotel rooms are not actually recording everything through a microphone. Acts like NIN and Destiny's Child, etc. Use tons of programmed parts and the actual recorded audio tends to be mostly vocals and things recorded directly into the system. The reason for that is Hotel rooms are not treated for audio in any way, and you never know what issues you will be forced to deal with when you walk in. It is fairly easy to create a decent makeshift area for vocals and maybe guitar by simply hanging up some blankets, but the more stuff you have to bring in the harder it will be.

He uses Logic on a MacBook pro with an Apogee interface.

Using the express slot for an eSATA controller you can use external SATA drives that have as good benchmarks as internal drives.

I'm sure that he worked on it on the road (sequencing and arraigning) but I doubt that there was a ton of actual recording going on
