saw a great bass last nite. my pals came over for wed. nite jam, and David brought a '68 fender percision. natual finish, chrome pick guard, the light color fret board (whatever) and the original case. it is killer. I don't really play bass, but the action on this thing was better than my Martin. it fretted like butter. he dabbles in used instruments and stuff. cool

You recognize good stuff man. Nice indeed. They were a hallmark of bass craftsmanship. That lasted a couple more years but the marketing demands started causing them to bring in more and more substandard imports under their name and QC was shaky, they lost a lot of ground through the 70`s. Around the '80 they got it back together again and it still took them till mid 80`s for them to get back to the level of quality they had once had. Now that early quality is evident in the neck construction, wood selection, fretwork, hardware, electronics, and detailing. Ibanez was making better clones of Fender than Fender was making themselves during the late 70's. That led me to buy one after shopping several Fender jazz basses back in '77. Ibanez prompted several international legal disputes over their quality during that period. Gibson fought them and won their case so they backed off the clone thing after some lengthy disputes and falling sales for Gibson/Epi, Gretsh, and Guild as well. I`ll probably pick up another Fender this next go around. I play a limited Washburn mostly now.

Hey toki which Washburn?

I got back into playing bass recently after twenty years:rolleyes: off and bought a used XB200. Nice tone, easy to play but output feels a little weak. Not exactly a valuable instrument so I'd put different pick ups in if anybody had strong suggestions. Looks very nice - warbling bird likes it.

Back in the late seventies I played a Mustang which was a bit weedy and then a Hofner semi acoustic which had been previously owned by Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads) , I was confidently informed - well, I sold it for a lot more than I paid for it, so that was OK. Except I probably shouldn't have sold it.

They dont make 'em like that anymore. Its nice that some guitar players appricate a nice bass now and then.

.

the xb series is a good bass design with good tone. They use some s. korean pickups that are made well.
I have an MB5 from that Mercury series they did for a while. But this one is unfinished on body or neck and no sealer, its just been rubbed with steel wool and oil. It has the Bartolini pickups and preamp in it instead of the stock they put on the floor models. Not a really expensive bass but the Barts are kickin and its made really well.
