A guitar buddy and me are heading over to Guitar Center tomorrow to pick him up a new amp (combo, cab and head). It's mostly for just jamming (can't quite here him well enough on his 30W). Was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on good buys for under $300? We're interested in amps with 65W or more. I know this limits the choices a bit, but if anyone knows of anything in this block, info would be appreciated.
Thanks.

EDIT: Wasn't able to find many good deals on Musiciansfriend, but came up with this:

What do you think?

I love my Fender ProJr.

Its *only* 15 watts but since its tube it is on a different level than solidstate amps that I assume you are refering to. Mine will keep with with a heavy hitting drummer 90% of the time.

A beautiful sounding amp that shines when cranked. ;)

i would get one from ebay. you could get a lot better amp for your money on ebay. a 30 tube amp would definitely keep up. i only use a 55 watt amp and my drummer is a damn hard hitter and i can easily drown him out......i normally only play on like 3 or 4 when we practice.

Definitely go with ebay, i just got a Line 6 Spider II 210 (2x10) for 300 bucks. That little fucker almost keeps up with my full stack and also has the most versatile amp settings i have ever dealt with. When i was shopping i spent alot of time on ebay looking for the right amp. I also found amps like Marchall MG50s for around 2 to 3 hundred as well. So yeah ebay would be the route i would take.

Yup,

In the $300 range, I would say Crate is about your only option if you high watts.

I don't think there really is anything for that price or under unless you get something used from someone who needs money bad.

Yeah, crates are good, solid, and overall pretty powerful amps. I don't really like their crunchy distortion too much, but if you have a good pedal then that shouldn't be a problem there (and I know a lot of people who swear by their crate distortion, so maybe you'll like it). They carry Crate at most decent-sized music stores, so go give it a try. Also, like everybody else mentioned, Ebay rocks for good deals on amps.

Also, I should add that you probably will want a powerful amp (100+ watts) instead of just getting a 30 watt or less tube like a few others suggested. It's always good to have that extra headroom without having to worry about unwanted distortion. Tube-freaks say what you want, but when we're talking cheap power, solid-state is the way to go.

uhmmm.......i would still look for a 30 to 50 watt tube amp on ebay. there's only about 3db difference between a 50 and 100 watt amp.

headroom wont be an issue, i promise. especially with a 40 or 50.......and i know a guy that has a gibson ga30rv that jammed with a local drummer around here.......this guy plays harder than anyone i have ever heard....and the amp kept up.

heres' a peavey classic30......i know.....it's peavey...........but search for some reviews of it on here.......pretty much everyone that has one loves it.

and there's lots more on there.

Crates the way to go. The GX models are cheaper than the Marshall amps of the same wattage, and they sound almost identical. The crate distortion isnt as smooth sounding as the ones on the marshalls, but the chorus is amazingly flexible and you can get a lot of different sounds out of it.
