IYO, What would be the best way to listen to some mic pres or outboard gear that you haven't heard much about? Like an effective buy for me recently was my TLM-103 and my Great River Preamp. Why? Because I've heard what the combination can do and I fell in love with it. That's a hell of a lot better and effective buy than going off a subjective review. I want to get additional mic pres. I know off the bat I'm going to need another Great River (got the 500 mono channel) but after that IDK. I've heard raving reviews and comments about the API units, the Manley Dual Mono Mic Pre, the Pendulum Audio MDP-1 and the Chandler units, but with the exception of the Manely, I have no idea what these units sound like (and I've forgotten how the Manely sounds....).
