I have quite a few microphones, but I still need 2-3 more in order to record an entire band with decent enough microphones at once. However, I don't have any outboard preamps and I know my tracks would sound a lot better with one. My question is should I focus on microphones or purchase a high quality preamp first. By the way, my board is a Soundcraft 200B so the preamps aren't as good an outboard pre, but aren't Mackie either (which I like for live sound, but not for recording).

Hey Rec-Engineer:

A GOOD MIC PRE-AMP will be an asset to your studio. It is especially neat for vocals if you like that UP FRONT Clear vocal, such as Sinatra did during his recording career. [Of course he used some awesome mics too]

I use an ART mic pre-amp but you can spend more too. If you get into the hi-end, make sure you rent one before you buy one.

Good sounds,

I've used an ART Pro pre and is the best in its price range. I'm considering to different types which I've heard, but never used. A stereo tube pre w/3 tone controls by Dredge-Tone and a Neve 1272 Class-A pre racked by Brent Averill. I don't know! The vocal mics I own are a matched-pair of Neumann TLM 103s, a matched-pair of Neumann
U 67s, and a Bruaner Valvet. Obviously I need a outboard pre to make these mics really shine, but most of my clients want to record all the tracks but vocals at one time and I'm about 3 mics shy to really do that yet. I figure when I do have enough mics, I'll have enough clients right away to pay for both my mics and pre.
