I'm thinking that portastudios are probably starting to dwindle since laptops are coming down in price and USB. I was looking at a portastudio and decided against it. I can get a duel core laptop and a Tascam 1800 for about $500, add Reaper to the mix and I am all set. I will only end up carrying on extra piece of equipment but get 16 inputs and a bigger screen.

The more I look, the less a portastudio make sense.

...

The DP-32 has not been on the market very long.
OTOH, after packing 32 PB tracks onboard it makes one wonder what kind of enhancements they can bring to the table.
48 playback tracks?
VGA output?
16 track simul record?
Instead of a big bump, F/I to 48, I'd look for a MkII version with some minor enhancements.
However, I don't think the DP-32 has been on the market more than a year, yet.
I'd say just wait if you're looking for a MkII caus Tascam has never given up on the Portastudio game, and I don't see it happening soon.
Portastudios are still one of Tascam's flagship products.
I think there will always be a market for the Portastudio format devices.
If you're looking at the DP-32, you might as well buy in and get started.
It's a pretty slick box & all-in-one units like this will always have certain technical compromises in design.
Back in 1980 when I was bouncing dubs from cassette to cassette, if I had a genuine cassette 4-track I think would have really be *the shit.
To conceive at that time of having 32 tracks on a tabletop unit, I think my head would have exploded!
We take a lot for granted these days, but technology is cool!
MO. YMMV.

:spank::eek:;)

Thanks for replies! .. I agree with your thoughts (A Reel Person) .. just hoping a "MkII" was/is in the near future. Overall upgraded specs/effects and monitor out would be great. It is a pretty incredible value as-is now. I can wait a while longer to see. - thx everyone! - Curt
