**edit; i guess i can't post any links until i've made 5 posts..??.. so i i'll put them in an album somewhere, of course no one will know where that is because, well, I can post any links..?? enjoy imagining what my room looks like.

Hello All:
Thanks to everyone who has contributed so intelligently. I have found a great deal of inspiration and information by reading your posts.

Obviously, I came to the site with some goals. I am converting a 10X11X7’ 11.5” bedroom into a recording / mixing space. The goal is simple. Design an acoustic environment that is conducive to creating portable mixes.

I presently have no plans to record full bands or acoustic drums. I work mostly with VST’s and V-drums with the occasional acoustic guitar.

Conveniently, the room has a ¾ bathroom. I tiled the shower last year so, with some additional treatment, viola, an ISO room/vocal booth.

I’m just as confused as every newb when it comes to acoustic treatment but I sure know a hell of a lot more than I did a few weeks ago.

Anyway, the purpose of this post is to show my current progress with some photos.

This is how the room looked on 9/6. You can see that I was already picking colors (no, those aren't HR824's sitting on the stack of CDs).

After ripping out the carpet on Thursday night I was left with this.

A couple days of work left me with this.

The back wall is a challenge acoustically. A total of 3 doors with one sitting at an angle. It creates a 60 degree "corner".

The new red oak floor will be finished on Wednesday of next week, so hopefully, I'll be up and running again in a couple of weeks.

I'll update with new photos as I progress.

Why would having a hardwood floor be better vs carpet?

you could just post the link text and we can copy and paste it into a browser! :D

Just make a couple of bogus posts in this thread to get to your 5 so we can see what you're working with.

Your room is looking cool. I too just finished ripping up carpet in my room and was pleasantly surprised to find hardwood floors. Your floors look to be in a little bit better shape than mine though.
In my opinion you should start by putting bass traps in the corners that you can. Having some treatment behind you and behind your desk/monitors would do some good as well. You should probably have something at the first reflection points as well. http://www.realtraps.com/art_room-setup.htm You might need a rug or something too since your floor and ceiling are hard surfaces now.
You might already know all this though!

All I know you can make an awesome setup and probably take advantage of all the strange angles your room has.

Just hit the books (maybe even consult experts) and you'd probably be on the right path...

I'm actually interested to know what you eventually end up doing... :):D:D

The back of the room could be worse.

Plan on covering the wall between the 2 doors in the back with some 4" to kill nulls off the back. Also, straddle some 4" across the wall/ceiling corner to finish it off and provide some good bass control in the rear of the room since you can't use the vertical wall/wall/corners.

Thanks for the encouraging words.
My initial plan for the back wall is to build a floor to ceiling low bass trap (with plans from Ethan's site) between the doors, make some mid-high absorbers to cover the two doors.

I built the frames for the clouds last night. I'm starting with 3. One over the mix/monitor position (4'X6'X4"). The other two (4'X2') will run down the long axis of the room initially and then tweak from there. I've been to a few fabric stores but haven't found what I'm looking for just yet.

Floor finishing starts tomorrow. If all goes well it will be done by Friday, so hopefully I can start setting the room back up 1 week from today.

Floor is finished!

I've just arrived at work, a little punch drunk on floor finish, and am happy to report that the last coat of finish went on this morning.

The process went smooth (ha, get it...) not a single bubble. Guess the lambs wool really was worth the money.

I'll snap some pictures and post them when I get home tonight.

An Update

Don't you hate when your hobbies conflict

I had hoped to finish the trim work over the weekend but........... The weather was nice on Sunday and I decided to ride my dirt bike instead.

The trim is about 90% installed. I'll finish it tonight.

I've done a fair amount of remodeling over the years but decided to do something a little different with the baseboards this time. I went with a four piece baseboard. It looks great but certainly is time consuming. It's probably overkill for the room but I like it.

I think the most frustrating part of this whole project is the fact that all of my equipment is stashed away so I can't play.

Not long now though. I WILL snap some pictures before I start the acoustic treatment.

WoooHOOO

Here are some more pictures of my progress.
I'm getting it back together

Yep, KRK RP8'sd..... :)

I still have a lot of treatment to do but I had to set the drums back up so I could at least play.

I'm in town all weekend so hopefully I can get the Bass traps and absorbers done. I have the frames for the clouds ready but still need to build the everything else.

I'll update as I go. It already sounds a lot better than it did.
