You have a really good budget there, but you didn't say WHAT you are recording!

The M-Audio Delta 44 is pretty good (it's what I have), <$200, N-Track is ~$60, spend the rest on Outboard gear (microphones/pre-amps/monitors) Just my 2 cents!

i'll be recording bass guitar mainly and keyboards (getting one soon) as well as droping in drum tracks, etc.

I've read a book called "the desktop studio" by emile menasche.it has given me a basic understanding of the workings of pc recording.

im leaning towards a m-audio solo firewire and cakewalk home studio xl. thoughts?

Nothing wrong with that setup, M-Audio makes pretty good stuff. Another thing to put into your budget is a nice set of monitors and acoustic treatment. You can't fix what you can't hear. And don't forget about mundane stuff like cables, mic stands, etc, that shit adds up quickly. And of course a couple mics too (expensive hobby ain't it?)

the one major limitation i have (besides buget) is that i live in an apartment building. so everthing has to be DI's into my pc as because i like having a place to live.
:)
