Quick question:

what does a mic pre-amp do... does it simply boost the signal of the microphone therefore reducing white/unpleasant noise from the signal???

any help would be great!

Pretty much, yeah. Mic signals are really weak so they need something to bring them up to an acceptable level. Since they take a small signal and blow it up they also blow up whatever noise is in that singal. The better the electronics and design of the preamp, the less noise and color they add on their own.

A great pre won't make a cheap mic sound great, but it will make it sound better. A cheap pre will make everything sound worse than it could.

Take care,
Chris
