Hi everyone...Hope I'm posting this in the right forum. I'm a jazz pianist and bassist and I've been doing some duo recordings in my music room. The room is roughly 15'x15' with ten foot ceilings, plaster walls, wood floors (about half covered with area rugs for sound dampening purposes), and two large (7' high) windows with heavy curtains. The piano is a 6'3" 1937 Baldwin grand. I've been getting some pretty decent results recording piano/bass duos and piano/archtop guitar, but I have some questions about improving the "sonic environment" in there.
1) there seems to be a mid-high pitched "slap-echo" effect on percussive sounds coming from the upper corners of the room. I've been doing some reading on soundproofing, and I understand that there's a difference between trying to "soundproof" a room and trying to "tune" a room. What are some options to help clean up some of the ringiness of the room? (it would be nice if whetever materials I used were either removable or not hideously ugly, but I'll take any/all suggestions)
2) I have regular piano trio rehearsals in the same room, and the drums just completely overload the space, making any kind of decent recording pretty much impossible. I would love nothing more than to be able to make trio recordings in there, but in order to do so, I'll have to figure out some way to isolate the drums with some type of portable construction. Are there any prefab products that might help me do this? If not, I can build a movable frame for drum isolation, but I have no idea what dimensions to make it, or what material to fill in the frame with. Any and all suggestions are welcome.
Thanks in advance.
