Ok, first time here.
I thought this would be another newbie question about setup (cause I am a newbie), but it turned out to be another ‘what soundcard…’ question…. So, I posted it here.

Please, take a look at my setup and help me:
mackie vlz 1604
e-mu darwin hdd 8ch recorder
yamaha msp5 monitors
sb live on a pretty decent computer

i'm planing on recording demos in the bands workout places, (actually i've done few), and i'm borrowing rest of the needed stuff (mics, cables, effects...)

what is my currently weak spot (besides acoustically awful places bands mostly use), and what do you recommend me to get next?
i suppose its soundcard, but witch one?
how do you rate darwin?

This leads to another question: should I stick to a darwin (and akai dr 16 possibly in the near future) and get soundcard just for mixing, or get soundcard for recording?
Cause I think it is mainly question of quality of converters (and maybe compression, if any, that those standalone recorders might use) [am I right?] but I don’t know how to rate them on darwin, akai or any soundcard. I always thought that standalone solutions are better but I suppose it works if the products are in the same class, and, I repeat, I don’t know about soundcards. I just know [am I right? => do I know? :D ] that their position inside the pc case gets their dynamic range affected due to interference with other stuff inside (anybody knows something about this???).

So soundcard with or without darwin (or whatever), which one, and does it makes difference if its inside or outside pc?
thanx
