I would like to do some recording of my wife using accompaniment tracks, with some of them being duets. I have thought about buying a stand alone recorder from Fostex to do this. Is this a good idea? What are your thoughts? :)

I would get an audio interface for my PC instead. By buying a multitrack recorder, you are a bit limited to certain uses. On top of that, you can also get a compact mixer and connect your equipment there.

What would the configuration be like using my computer to do this?

What's your computer specs.? CPU? RAM?

If you run a healthy system, get an audio interface with multiple inputs/outputs or simply buy a mixer. You would also require software(s) to record and mix.

For no more than you're wanting to do, I'd find a used Yamaha AW16g off of Ebay.

It can import your backing tracks from CD and you can let your wife (and 7 others if you like) sing.

Should run you in the $400-$700 range.
