Newbie recorder, needs help

Hey everyone,

I'm pretty new to recording, I'm a singer/songwriter. I'm currently trying to find a setup to do some demos. I'm not looking for anything fancy cos I'm on a college student's budget.

I currently play with 2 acoustic guitars and 1 electric, Ibanez FC series, an Ovation Celebrity and a PRS Tremonti SE. I also use an Alesis SR16 drum machine. I also use a couple of Shure SM-58 mics (I'm poor, bite me). I'm planning on getting a cheap bass guitar pretty soon (probably a squire). I also have a P3 (1 Ghz), 512 RAM, 80 gigs of hard and currently use Digidesign Pro-tools and Fruitloops recording software. I'm also pretty computer savvy, so I'm not planning on upgrading much further.

Recently, I got sick of having to use my $12 radio shack mic with sound recorder for half ass recordings. I'm trying to build a decent home studio so I can do some demos. I'm wondering if anyone could recommend me a decent digital interface and any other equipment I might need for the equipment I described above. The sound I am aiming for is something like a cross between Goo Goo Dolls and Coldplay. Any help would be greatly appreciated, such as what rig you're using, etc.
 
What PT interface are you using? Are you looking to upgrade or change that?

They're professional level mics. You bite me.

You can't run protools with a Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum anything, and your Behringer mixer will do just fine for mixdowns.

I used to use Garageband, thought it was pretty good. I didn't know there was something like this out there. I'm new to the recording thing, but now you got me wondering should I still get the behringer if there is an internal mixer for the MAudio.... btw, is there one that's one step up so I can plug in a few more instruments ie. more inputs?
 
Sure. Snoop around here for a while and you'll find many wonderful things. Small mixers with USB interfaces, USB keyboard controllers, multi-input and output audio interfaces, moving fader controller interfaces, etc etc etc.

I think that you may get better advice if you let us know what you'll be recording. For example, will you be playing all instruments one at a time? Or will there be a band playing a bunch of things at once that you want to record?

If you are recording just one thing at a time, you can get a decent pre-amp and converter for the same $$$ as a bunch of crappy pre-amps and convertors...

I've got a Groove Tubes tube condensor mic, and I still prefer the SM58 for vocal tracks! When you get a decent pre-amp behind it, that's a great sounding mic.
 
Well the set up, I have is with another guitarist. We plan to do probably 2 guitars,2 vocals and a drum machine (alesis sr16) all at the same time.

We were also planning on mic-ing (planning on a Studio Projects C4 Condenser) acoustic guitars because the pick up blows. We then would layer on bass and vocal harmonies onto the finished product.

I've already bought a behringer 1202FX mixer which I run through my sound card (Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live) and currently wondering if I need anymore equipment.
