I'm interested in recording at home. My first question is what gear I need to get.

I already own: computer, powered mixer, two effects units, mics, amps, and instruments.

From what I've read on this board, I believe all I need to buy are: soundcard, monitors, and software. Is this correct?

Thanks for answering..

do you have a way to bypass the amp in that powered mixer????? if not you need a new mixer.

I should have a way to bypass the amp in the powered mixer. Are you saying, for recording into a soundcard on a PC, the signal needs to be totally unpowered? So recording a kick drum (for example) would be a mic in front of the drum, going into the mixer to set the level and basic EQ, and the output of the mixer goes into the computer's soundcard?

Thanks!

The best situation is if you have channel sends on your mixer. What model is it?

You will want to look at soundcards and think about # of inputs you will need at 1 time. It you're recording drums, you will need alot.

As far as software, you can start by checking out NTrack at fasoft.com .

thats right, you need a totally unpowered LINE LEVEL signal. Not a powered signal meant to push speakers. If you send the signal from the speaker outputs to the soundcard you would hear nothing put a distorted mess (assuming you don't break someting first).

Also, "owning a computer", and owning a computer that is capable of doing HD recording are not necessarily the same thing.

Although there is no hard and fast rule (due to number of tracks, number of FX, type of FX, etc.), I think you'll want at least a 500 MHz computer, with 128 Mb of memory, and a relatively fast HD. Faster computer, more memory, and a bigger faster HD would be even better.

You'll probably also want a CD burner.

Good luck and welcome to the club - i.e, those of us who tend to buy a new plug-in before bothering to pay the rent.
