Hi, sorry for the lame question, easy on the flames..

I just got all setup with Pro tools on the MAC and I want to know the best method for recording guitar??? What I think I know are two options: 1) direct 2) mic and amp ..

On the direct route, do I need to go through a mixer?? Also I am assuming that I would be using amp like effects within pro tools to simulate reverb, distortion, etc..

thanks for any inputs..

What is your soundcard?

If you dont have an instrument level input than you will need a Direct Box, Effects Unit or mixer to record direct.

If you want to mic it you will need a mic and preamp or mixer to get it in there.

Lets see. I am using the digi design card with breakout box that came with pro tools.. It has two mic inputs in the front and 6 1/4 inputs in the back.. Can I assume these are line level inputs??

thanks

well, if he's got the digi001 then its got pre's in it. your method of recording depends on your preference. i always mic my amp...but i've also never found an amp simulator that i liked. i've heard some tracks that were done with amp sims that sounded great but once again it kinda depends on your preferences and if you like the sounds you get. just experiment and decide for yourself what you like.
