Recording Choices

After reading through posts in this message board, I have narrowed my choices to 2 options for begining my home recording. My band currently has 3 mics, an SM58 and 2 semi-crappy radioshack ones. We wnat to start recording our orgional music, and using a video carera to get our recording just isnt sounding good anymore. Here are my choices, the Audiotrak Inca 88, and the Tascam 424 mkIII. I have an Aureal Vortex 2500 sound card and Sonar. I don't really want to record casettes, but I do want to be able to have easy control of my different inputs. Would buying a sound card with 8 inputs/8 outputs built in preamp and phantom power (all these things I know nothing about but i hear people talking about them so i assume its important) be better than the Tascam 4 track recorder? Both are about the same price. I appreciate any feedback on this subject, thanks. -Dave

A liitle mixer 6 channel or 8 and use your present sound card it may save a few bucks. Hook your mics up to mixer and then mix them down thru your mixer outputs( probably stereo left and right outs) to your present soundcard

How about you look at the MAudio Delta cards.

You could get a 4in 4out card (delta 44 or delta 66) and get the Omni I/O -- It's got all the phantom power and mic pre's built in.

I have been known to be wrong though, so If anyone agrees with me, please say so.

Thanks again guys

The Omni Studio would be great for you if you don't need more than 4 analog tracks in at once. If you've got any spdif gear, such as the j-station, you can get another 2 inputs for a total of 6 inputs at once. It has 2 built in preamps, and phantom power and runs right at about $300.

Looking good

The Omni Studio looks very nice, and the price isnt too bad. (looking at the package again) Wow it is getting better every time i read about it. Ok, now if that ends up being too expensive what is my next best deal, buying a mixer and hooking it up to my current sound card, or buy a sound card?
