Hi,

I have an maudio 2496 card and I'm using software (Guitar Pro 5) that allows playback via midi. When I choose my sound card and go to select a midi (sound bank, there are several to choose from) it sounds ok but not realistic. Is this a result of the soundbanks not being of high quality? I tried switching to different ones but they all sounded pretty much the same.

I don't completely understand the midi soundbank stuff, how to find others, and how to install them. I'd appreciate any information.

Thanks,
Rut

Read up on soundfonts here --- LINK --- then go to KVR and download a freeware, donationware or shareware soundfont player.

Well I started out using a similar setup to what you describe but I found it as limiting as my 4-track Tascam mini-studio was. I eventually upgraded to an external midi device that I used a midi-thru on to grab midi sounds from a Boss DR5 unit and push them thru my software (Sonar) and into the assigned out (monitors). It ain't perfect but for what I'm doing (recording guitar and bass) it adds the pieces that I'm missing (keys and drums).
