I am just getting started in home recording so please bare with me..

I was told to come here.. because this is where the experts are..

I am wanting to record my band music into my computer from the current mixing board i have.. which of course is multitracked..

i have software.. such as cooledit pro that i plan on using..

what i really want to do.. is take each track..eg.. voice, guitars, drums, bass..etc

run it in my computer at once.. and multitrack it into software to where i can make adjustments later..

meaning the tracks from all instruments will be separate.. but do it at once. i really do not want to go back and do each track separate...

what soundcard is available to do this...that is affordable...
should i be using better music software
is there a diagram on the net somewhere that will show me a schematic on how to set everything up .. running from the board to my pc?

i appreciate if someone could direct me please because i would love to get started on this asap.. looking for the soundcard

Read The Guide:

http://www.tweakheadz.com/guide.htm

It gives you the fundamentals on all aspects of home recording, and one component of it is a bunch of sample studios.

You'll probably learn this there, but to answer your soundcard question, you'll probably have to go for something like this:

http://www.zzounds.com/a--2676837/item--MDOD1010E

There are certainly options, but since you want to record many tracks simultaneously (and drums take oh, so many) you'll need a lot of ins, and that means money.

Thanks for the quick reply

that item only gets 8 ins and outs..

suppose i want to hook this up to a live sessions

meaning when we goto our show i want to record live....

also if we have a board i can make the adjustments from my board can i not? then run it to my pc for recording? or should i go that route if i want to edit each track?

i dont think there is software that can distinguish tracks if you record one wav file is there?

anyways... basically what sums it up is .. what software will reconize the tracks with using a soundcard record at once without having to start over and over .. just get the song. have it on separate tracks.. take it home later and do the editing.. and what soundcard do i need to do this..

the item you showed me only supports 8 ins and outs....
how does my pc reconize this with software?

would it be better to buy a few different sound cards?
again.. im a newb

I don't know Cool Edit Pro, but I think its like other multitracking software (cakewalk, steinberg and their ilk).

Each "in" on the 1010 (or any other soundcard/interface) will be recorded as a seperate track in the software.

You're correct in assuming that if you just record from the main outs on your board to one stereo track, you won't be able to seperate that track out into its components. So, you HAVE to have something like the 1010 if you want to record live and mix later. You could use your board for level setting, and send the direct outs to the ins on the 1010. You'll probably just have to mix the drums live on a dedicated bus, and send them to the interface as a stereo pair.

8 ins is a lot. I'm fairly certain you can install multiple 1010s on one box if you REALLY need more. The only alternative I know of is a $1500 MOTU interface, which I think has 24 jacks that can be used as ins or outs. In any case, we're talking about a really large rig to be dragging to live shows.

Finally, buying a few "different" sound cards is pointless and a recipe for trouble. Buying a few of the same, heavy-duty soundcard may be necessary if you really, really want all those ins.

I should also note that recording a massive number of tracks on a PC simultaneously might be to much for the PC (or the software - this isn't new stuff, is it?) to handle.

ok so lets say i go with the 1010...

how does my software react to this?

in cooledit.. when i go into multitrack view.. i have to specify what soundcard or source im recording from .. on track 1
and so forth when i goto track 2

so if i hook up the 1010 .. it has 8 ins..

1-mic
2-guitar
3-bass

etc..

how do i specify to my software ok.. look for input 1 for recording..

nevermind.. above post.. i just called the company you referred me to.. about the 1010.. salesperson was really cool enough to explain.. what you explained to me earlier in post...

he did say this is what i needed to do so.. also.. on how just to collaborate drums to one track .. using a mixer board to the 1010.. which i own a mixer board..

so im really excited about getting this equipment in the next few weeks.. thanks so much for your advice..

No problem! I still highly recommend reading the Tweakheadz guide and hanging around here - unless you you're a grizzled veteran pro engineer, there's still a lot to learn from this site.

definately

i do have another question regarding this.. i now have in my plans to buy this equipment within the next few weeks...

but im a bit confused about some things..

how do i actually go about hooking this up from the sound board itself?

what is required?

keep in mind they will be playing.. using thier sound board..

now i know they have aobut 8 auxillarys. they can run out of..

also what cabling is involved? from that board to the 1010 .. does it come with it?
