Newbie Question on Rack FX

hey guys im really new to the concept of rack mounted processing. I love pedals, and im not sure of the perceived benefits...do rack effects have more programmability given their larger size? And do rack effects fit a standard size? I have a compressor that can be rack mounted, thugh I'm not sure how to hook it up in a guitar chain.

Mic(s) -> Pre -> comp -> recording device

or

DI -> comp -> recording device

According to the Marshall amp manual I have for my JCM900, it recommends you plug the output of the compressor into the input of your amp. It says do not plug it into the effects loop (not sure the technical reason for that but I find it works ok like that).
