I've been mixing with headphones up until now(hasn't mattered much, I'm just a hack). But I'm getting the impression that an "economical" choice in a set of decent monitors is still better than using cans alone. My price range for the moment is $1000-$1500(Canadian). My main concern is finding a set(I have no amp what so ever) that delivers the most accurate sound for the price. I'm a little overwhelmed by the choices and need some expert advice. What factors should I consider while making a selection? Any "safe bet"s come to mind? Please include your reasons if suggesting a specific model.

Thanks a bunch

Most folks around here argue that you need to test drive monitors by listening to them carfeully in a decent room. You should also consider your monitor search in light of how well your mixing area is treated. Even the best monitors will fail you if your room is not balanced. You will also probably benefit by doing a search for posts with monitor suggestions. There are a bunch out their including a good Harvey Gerst post on some very specific listening strategies when you shop for a monitor. I could make some suggestions based on your budget (Mackie 824, KRK V8, Tannoy Reveals) but that's just based on too many years reading these forums!

Yo Nee-see-narian:

For about 700 pezzutos, and shipping, you can get a pair of Adam passives.

They should last you for a long time.

I have the KRK passives with an 8" woofer--very good monitors for the money. However, I've noticed that the KRK price has gone up.
