alright, i'm just getting really frustrated now, so hopefully someone can help. let me explain by saying i talk the talk, but don't walk the walk. i know enough to get around in a live setting, but really I'm a drummer-once-pianist wishing i knew how to do more computer-music related things.

i've got the following semi-set-up:

mackie 1402
m-audio delta 44
yorkville ap4040
dod dimension 3
reason 2.0/windows xp
pc midi-flyer
baldwin dg-100
yamaha club series monitors and speakers

so the problems I'm having are:

1) do i need a pre-amp from the mackie to the delta 44? i was hoping i could just run out of the monitor line outs on the mixer into line 1&2 of the delta 44. it doesn't seem to find it though.

2) no matter what i try, the pc flyer will not work with windows xp. i can run the piano through the line-outs i have into the mixer and then out, but it would be so much more convenient to get the midi up and running.

3) the outs on the delta 44 don't seem to function no matter what i try. can someone explain the correct set-up on this if i wanted to bypass my audiocard (complete crap)?

4) is there a simple wav recording function in reason, or should i just get something simpler for that and create samples outside of reason? suggestions?

Basically, what I'm trying to do is intergrate my live sound system (the mackie 1402/dimension 3/ap4040) with my computer system (xp/delta 44/baldwin dg100/midi pc-flyer) so i can use the live sound system, record rehearsals, control the digital piano through the live sound system and playback computer compositions.

If this were put in a big box in front of you, how would you do it? Do i need something integral I'm missing?

Thanks!

No, just use the Mackie's built-in pres. How many tracks do you want to record at once? If it's just 2, use the Main stereo outs from the Mackie. If it's 3 or 4, use the direct outs or inserts on the individual mixer channels.

Sorry, I don't know what a pc flyer is, but I do know the delta 44 don't do midi. Lineout into the mixer sounds like the way to go

If you have an onboard sound card, disable it in the bios. Make sure you've loaded the drivers for the delta 44.
In the delta Control Panel, patchbay router tab, select the button 'Monitor Mixer'

Don't know a lot about reason, but I don't think it records audio. You're better off getting another program for that - check out the Cakewalk site

With the mixer & sound card, you have most of what you need. Plug all your instruments, mics etc. into the mixer, and get some s/w that can record the audio

thanks for your help.

so, do i even need the delta 44? am i gaining any amount of quality there, or is it not noticable enough to bother? i blew $350 on it 3 years ago, and never did learn how to get it working right. :-\

Yeah the 44 is a great card. It will piss all over any crappy onboard thing you've got.

4 track recording, balanced inputs, 24/96. They're a lot cheaper than 3 fifty now though

yeah, i know, a friend of mine just got one on ebay for $100. i wouldn't feel so bad about it had i ever gotten it to work!

btw, for onboard sound, do you mean literally motherboard sound, or a card? mine is jsut a crappy card and I've tried bypassing it in the sound settings by setting it to delta but it seems as though my choices are the same. (delta 1/2, 3/4, monitor mix) with no choice for in/out. so you're saying if i switch the playback to monitor mix, i should be good? and i need no additional preamp and can simply route the out back to my amp?

thanks!

If you've got another sound card that windows knows about, it's best to first uninstall the drivers and then physically remove the card.

There are some free audio recording around you can download. Search for one called Magix or magicstudio or something. When you profile the soundcard in the recording s/w, you should see a list of both input & output drivers (delta left 1/2, delta right 1/2 etc.)

Then just run 2 of the outs to your amp for monitoring

girlthatdrums. bh makes good points. keep that delta 44,
just an idea there are users over at the powertracks forum at pgmusic.com
who know way more about the delta than i do. they are way more expert than i am on midi issues as well. ive never used midi flyer. i would highly suggest you ask there, as i'm sure they will help you get set up quick.
theyve been doing midi since forever. great buncjh of users.
just an idea.
