Hey all.

I am new here and had a question about home recording.

I play bass and for a long time I have always taken my drum machine and set up beats then improvised over them for fun but I never had a means to record any of my ideas.

Now I am getting to a point where I am looking to move up to doing somemore songwriting and so I was looking for a means to do what I have done prior...except record them.

I am looking at the Fostex MR8 because I want to be able to upload the cuts to my PC and work on adding more layers and such.

Is the MR8 the best choice for me or can I do the same thing with a cassettee based model and save the money?

Thanks

I don't think cassette is in the same universe as the MR8. With the MR8, if used well, you can make fine quality recordings that will sound clean and be at a full 16 bits (like CDs). Plus, with the MR8, getting into a PC and editing will be much easier and better than coming from an analogue source.

For some scenarios you might want a preamp feeding into the MR8 (such as when using a condensor mic, or even going from the guitar-preamp-MR8). Even so, at $300. the MR8 represents a great value.

At $700. the VF80EX will take you all the way through a mastered and burned CD. But that's more than you seemed to be looking for.

mr8

thats right you will need a pre amp, a cheap 45.oo behringer two channel mixer will do, and software to mix on the pc with, lots available, i like n track but many work well

Thanks for that advice. I think I am going to get me one as soon as I get paid.

DO you guys use preamps for every instrument with the MR-8?

WIth bass I run direct (most of the time becuase I am lazy)

With Guitar I use a POD.

With vox I use a condeser with a mic pre amp.

pre

i always use a amplifier miced into the pa into the recorder, much stronger more pre determined sound and hotter signal without clipping, especially bass, i want to record the wayu it sounds from the amps

my direct bass goes to my Art pre and then to a processor that I just use a low pass filter on it. Set about 2 or 3kHz b/c I like a little string attack. But it's mixing w/ acoustic guitar and i want it to blend. I'd mic some amp too if I wanted more bottom but then I might need compression and some very low cut, from what I read.

It's just way more controlled than when I used to mic the amp. and the preamp seems to be a little bit more full than the MR8's amp.
