Newbie Needs Help (Sound Card Stuff)

Hey everyone, I have a

Pentium III 500mhz with 256megs of ram,
Right now i got me a weirdo unknown Sound Blaster 64, or 128 (not sure) sound card. The card isnt very good for recording, it distorts everything.

so i'm planning on finally upgrading and im one of those starving musicians, so ive had my eye on an EMU 0404 or Audiophile 2496. They seem very similar, and are both about 100 bucks. The connections they have arent very useful though, I dont own a mixer or anything like that, just a Condenser Mic with an ART preamp, and a pair of headphones. If i get one of those soudcards above, I dont need to remove my original soundcard right? Cause im thinking, if i have to remove my sound blaster, im gonna have a tough time trying to figure out where to plug my headphones in, im not sure. the emu only has 1/4 plugs and a midi, and the 2496 only has RCA plugs, Any Suggestions anyone?

but if i dont need to remove my original sound card (which has pretty good playblack) then i should go on ahead and get one of those recording cards.

BTW, which would you reccomend, The EMU 0404 or the Audiophile 2496

difficult call. you might want to read the laptop thread at the top for lots of info on daw stuff.
audiophile been around longer. proven. lots of folks like it.
emu new - but apparently has nice convertors.
if you want to monitor take the stereo out of the sb or the new sound card you get into a home hi fi amp and plug phones into the amp.
just one way.
if you get a chance upgrade your pc.

Thanks, so does that mean i can connect both my soundcards together? im thinking of getting the audiophile, i like to get something thats been proven. I could just set the Playback to my SB and my recording to the Audiophile right? Im getting ready right now to buy the 2496 right now on sweetwater.

I got my Delta 66 and didn't read the manual for like 3 years (DOH!), and when I finally read it, I figured out that I can route my regular sound (MP3s, recorded tracks, etc.) through the output of my Delta66 and monitor my input at the same time. So for quite a while I was recording into the Delta66, than playing what I recorded back through my regular soundcard while I recorded other tracks over it. The only bad thing about this is that you can't monitor what you're singing/playing, but like I said, I did it for a couple of years before i read my manual.

So I guess what I'm saying is that if you don't want to use the outputs on whatever card you decide to get, you should be able to route the output from whatever recording software you're using to your old soundcard

You could probably get some converters from RadioShack that would enable you to plug headphones into those outputs, but I don't know how the volume levels will be, and you sound like you like your original soundcards outputs anyway.

be CAREFULL masa. if your recording with the audiophile in 24 bit and then playing back using sb i think youll have probs bcos as far as i know sb does not play back 24 bit. if were me i would record and playback using audiophile and as i said before monitor using a home hi fi with phones plugged into.
you can also use an old cassette deck if not much money.
audiophile stereo line out>>>cassette deck stereo line in for example.
OR audiophile line out>>>>power amp or home hi fi stereo line in.
driving main monitoring. do you have monitors ?
 
You won't be able to monitor what you are recording into the Audiophile through the SB Live, only play back what's already recorded.

For phones, why not get a small mixer?
 
Thanks for the info guys!, you really helped alot. I decided to buy the audiophile and get myself a bunch of HOSA adapters , the Y cable types, so i can use a stereo female into to RCA male plugs, took a while to look for em, but i got em.
