Hey Everyone

I'm a drummer, and sort of always wind up recording my various bands' rehearsals to my laptop. Until this past summer it's mainly been using one stereo mic placed sort of in the middle of the room but also away from the drums.

I came across a deal on some radio shack mics and now own 4 x "Sennheiser e604 copies" (I forget the RS model number, but they're tom mics that clip to the rims) and 1 x PZM boundary mic. I might be coming into another PZM or two via ebay ... I also have access to an 8 channel mixer that I can run into my Mac via a 4 track USB interface.

How should I use the mics to mic my kit (or even also to mic the guitar & bass amps) ? I play a kick, two rack toms, one floor tom, one snare, and about 7 cymbals. Sometimes I also use a second, smaller snare on the side. Yeah, I'm a gear head ...

This will mainly be for rehearsals, but it's also for fun for me to learn about recording. I've recorded before using one mic in front of the kick and one overhead, and liked the results save for the toms sounding kind of far away. So I'm wondering about close mic'ing all three toms, btu also don't want to get in over my head in terms of mixing, phase problems, and other stuff i don't even know about!

I've read that the PZMs make great room mics, that you can use them as overheads, and that you can lay one on a blanket in your kick. I've read that the RS "e604"s are only good for toms; also read that they do a decent job on snares. You get the point -- it seems like you can experiment, but I'd like to do so armed with someone else's wisdom and experience ;-)

Can I get a decent sound with what I've got, or should I look to pick up a decent kick mic, snare mic, and/or overhead(s)?

Thanks for any advice!

Ouch! You know, I got one of those Radio Shaqq Sennheiser e604 copies some years back and it was horrid!! I actually tried it for the bottom head of my snare and it didn't even sound good there.

Maybe I got a bum one. Anyone else?

PZMs are good for all kinds of things, but the best IMO would be kick drum. You might want to invest in a pair of decent overheads. MXL 603s come to mind.
