So I have a budget of 400- to 500 bucks. I am looking for something that I could record a full band on (4 tracks or so) at one time, also something computer friendly. I was looking at the lexicon omega package with cubcase. (just as an idea of what i am thinking). i need everything, mics, cables etc. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Do you already have a computer?

in that price range you can find a Firepod or MOTU 8pre. Both have 8 inputs and both are firewire.

my question with that is since it dosnt have onboard eq can i get a good eq outa what ever software i get?

For overall performance, eq, etc... cubase is a very good choice. Later when you can afford it get some good plug-packages. I personally love Waves...

Check out Echo Audiofire. I have had good luck with them in the past. good converters for cheap and soooo much better than M-audio.

CAD has some very good mics for cheap too.

Speakers?? I'm kinda high-end there.. so I can't suggest any inexpensive ones.. -- maybe headphones for now (even though I hate suggesting that)..

Good luck.

yeh, found out my computer dosnt have firewire. But iam gonna add a firewire card in the price. But as far as mics go i was lookin at a mxl mic package

If you're looking at something with a Cubase bundle, you'll be getting the LE version. It's still pretty good. The plugs that come with Cubase aren't too shabby and are cpu efficient. You can also look around for free plugs to download. I used the free Kjaerhaus Classic series before getting my UAD card.

Firewire is the way to go for 4 or more channels simultaneously. And as Buckkillr8 said, look for the TI chip set. There are compatibilty issues with others.

peace.

sweet, thanks for that tip. what bout a shock mount? def on the pop filter cuz i get into my vocals alot

You could probably do without the shock mount. But it's something you can pickup anytime. The MXL shock mounts like the one for the 57m get a lot of reviews about being cheap and breaking very quickly though.

what exactly does the shcok mount do? iam use to live sound and our mics are as beat up as al get out so i want to make sure my mics are kept in good shape

Well it doesn't protect against neglect, so take care of your mics. Especially condensers :) The shock mount does exactly what the name implies. It's there to reduce the shock and vibrations from accidental hits to the mic stand and such. Never really used live.

I've got one of those V57M's, I really like it. Not so hyped up on the high end. Kind of a dark feel.

The shock mount just separates the mic from the stand with a bungee cord clamp type holder. It helps to eliminate noise finding its way into the mic trhough the stand. Condensors are more susceptible to environmental noise than Dynamics. If you leave it on a mic stand and not touch it, you won't have any problems with it breaking. I wouldn't use one live.

Yeah I like it too. Has a great soft feeling to it as well. One of MXL's better mics.

the mic package from what ive heard has a pretty good instrument mic, especially with acoustics. which i plan to do alot of

another good mic (apparently) is the mca sp1 for $39 + $12 shipping from pssl.com

for shockmounts, I kinda like the sampson sp01 from amazon for $29.

It should work with the sort of condenser mics that have threaded xlr stems on the bottom.

indeed why is this? we dont even use those for live sound
