Hello Everyone,

Geedub Newbie here. If the question belongs in a different form please let me know and/or feel free to transfer it to the proper forum.

Next week I'll be taking delivery on a pair of Tannoy SBM's. I'm looking for a little bit of information on specifications and/or details but all I've been able to learn so far is described below:

6 in woofer
1 in tweeter
passive
black
similar to Tanoy PBM 6.5's

I searched this site and one or two others along with google search's and just can't find much information at all.

Can any one give me a little more information like power consumption/wattage, ohm rating etc?

Woot! Woot! Woot! along with multiple and manifold thanks Fairview!!

Now if I only understood a little more about what those spec's mean all would be well in my universe. I do have a follow up question that I realize is harder to answer:

If I'm understanding correctly, these monitors require a power amp, which is something additional that I need to acquire. Do you have an opinion/preference regarding acquiring a power amp and using the Tannoy's versus using that same money ($100-$250) to put towards a pair of newer active monitors?

Other parameters...
Macbook Pro
Reaper
M-Audio M-Track
MXL 990 Microphones
Living room studio
I'm recording mine and my bands music for demo's etc., and plan to grow my studio over time
I have somewhat of an affinity for used equipment

If you already have the monitors, then get the power amp. If you don't, get powered monitors.

Once you have everything hooked up, it doesn't really matter if you have active or passive monitors. But actives are just easier and they were obviously fitted with the proper amp for the speakers. There is just less guesswork.

You will need a stereo power amplifier of around 80watts continuous output into 8 Ohms per channel ("rms" watts is bollox!) since such an amplifier will probably deliver a bit more into the Tannoy's 6 Ohms.

Personally I would look for a "hi fi" integrated amplifier, even a receiver and look at the regular names, Sony, Pioneer, Denon (they never made a bad ANYTHING!) Panasonic. Any of these amps will deliver fine audio quality.

Slight downside, the inputs will be unbalanced RCAs but generally not a problem in a compact HR system.

Dave.
