Hey, my name is Mike. I am new to the forum and everything else. I am looking to setup a little studio in my basement. My wife sings on a worship team and I am wanting to record her. I have been looking at some of the packages on Musician's Friend. Are those any good? If not, what is a good setup at a reasonable price? Thanks.

That's very wide and vague. No one can tell you what would be better than a package you haven't told them about. No one can tell you if the packages you've been looking at are any good if you don't tell us what ones you have been looking at.
Could you furnish us with some details ?

Oh, and welcome, by the way.

I bought a Blue Yet on Ebay for $100 and it's been great.

Ah, I get it. It's St Vague's day. He was the patron saint making statements that don't actually tell you anything.

Are you looking for a stand alone multitrack, or Computer software?

I guess it's all boiling down to what you are going to do with the end product of your recordings.
You might want to take a look at the Zoom H4n. ;)

Ok I got ya, I didn't give enough info. I have been looking at the equipment that runs off software. I looked at the PreSonus Audiobox USB Recording Package and the Avid Pro-Tools Mbox Mini (3rd Gen) Package and the Digidesign Pro Tools Mbox 2 Factory Package on musiciansfriend.com. I have also been looking at different stuff on ebay and craigslist. Just want to get a decent setup to record my wife and her friends.

Hi newbie, this is newbie here...

I know that Behringer is not loved by most of the people here but I bought one xenyx 502 at a very good price, so if you want to plug a microphone and one or two instruments, this is a good entry level option. As per the software, I have Audacity which is free and works very well.

Of course this is just a comment from a newbie...

What kind of computer? PC, Mac, laptop? Specs? OS?

What kind of quality are you looking for in the finished recordings? Do you have any mics currently? Are you recording to prerecorded backing tracks or doing your own instrumentation too? Does your wife have any previous recording/performing experience i.e. does she know how to "work" a mic properly?

FWIW the M-Box is likely a solid piece of hardware but you could save yourself over $300 by getting the hardware only and using Reaper as your software solution. Reaper is $40 vs about another $350 for the MBox/PT set.
