Hi guys,

I've been lurking on these forums for a while but this is the first time I've ever posted something. Everyone here seems cool and seems to know what they're talking about, and I'd appreciate feedback on my recordings if you would be so kind as to give it. :)

I'm quite happy with the production of 'waffle' and 'sanitarium' the most, 'for whom the bell tolls' could be a bit better and the 'sky of maggots' song isn't produced too well as I was just trying to get some ideas down quickly and wasn't worrying too much about production.

I used a toneport with the metalshop pack (big bottom) for heavy sounds, 1987 jazz clean for clean sounds, and usually the treadplate model for leads.

In waffle I used my C7 Hellraiser with EMG 81-7 and 60-7 pickups, and in all the other songs I used my ESP Horizon NT with Dimarzio D activator pickups.

All done in cubase SX3 with EZdrummer DKFH.

Freaking brilliant!

Loved everything except for the Sky of Maggots song but thats coz im not really into death metal. I do like Cradle of Filth and the like though...

Good stuff.

Your tone is awesome!
What do you record through?

I listened to Waffle. Sorry, not familiar with the original so can't compare. I think it's a great recording. It sounds like you've been doing this recording thing for a while. Good tones on the guitars and drums are programmed very well. I especially like the combination of clean and distorted guitar, both working well together and share equal presence in the mix. Nice playing too...and welcome to the MP3 clinic! :D

Heya, I listened to Waffle and Sanitarium and liked them both. Guitar tones are nice.

I use ezdrummer too and I noticed one small issue that I'm always fighting and that's the overhead mics. To me, they always come through too hot. I noticed it more so on sanitarium.

I think it took a lot of work to write out the midi parts for the drums. Good job.

Cool man.
Cheers,

unet - Thanks for the comments man. I state everything I record through in my original post. I'm glad you liked them.

ido1957 - I've only been recording for a few months to be honest, but I know some people on the net who are very informative and always share insight, plus I've always had a good ear for 'tone'.

Chili - Yeh the overhead mics can be annoying. I want to have them high in the mix to get a good cymbal sound but too high and they mess with my snare sound. I compress them, but I want to experiment with other things too. I also, actually cheated with the drum tracks. Whenever I do covers I don't program the drums myself. I just export the MIDI from guitar pro files and import it right into Cubase and EZdrummer. I know it's kind of cheating but the fact of the matter is, I'd get the same result if I programmed them myself, and this way I can spend more time playing and mixing, rather than making the drum tracks myself.

Thanks for all the wonderful comments guys. I'm glad I got a good reception here. Expect PLENTY more from me.

Rock on

Really like how clean the recordings sound.
Pretty good balancing also.

I would recommend it EXTREMELY highly.

It's basically a little box you can plug guitars directly into, or also mics (I have a UX2 so I can plug two mics into mine) and it comes with some guitar models, some bass models (both amps and cabs) and also some pre-amp models for vocals and such, as well as presets for all kinds of guitar/bass/vocal tones. It works like a POD too in that it plugs into your PC via USB and you can buy the upgrade packs for it (I bought the triple pack with the metal amps, vintage amps and more effects).

I used to own a digidesign mbox, which is supposed to be a great product, but nothing about it worked on my computer. Pro tools didn't work, my computer only 'half' recognised the mbox...it was a disaster. I spent an entire year trying to make the thing work and I eventually just sold it on ebay to finance this and I haven't been happier to be honest.

I mean, I'm fairly experienced with tone and stuff like that, but I'm not very experienced with recording at all, and I'm quite pleased with what I have so far. Definitely get one.

Good guitar work, Dylan. I liked "Bell Tolls" best. "Welcome Home" was good, too. I'm a fan of the bass, which I felt could have been more present. Not really familiar with Death Metal, but I would imagine that more bass could only help to drive it. Looking forward to hearing more of your originals.

I'm not familiar with what a 'good' bass tone is or anything like that and I have a hard time mixing bass. For 'sanitarium' I actually had a clean bass sound for the clean parts and a seperate bass tone for the distorted parts with some dirt on it. I think for clean I used a bass amp and for dirts I used a modified 'big bottom' guitar amp patch.

There isn't any bass on the death metal song as of yet. I did have a version that was just the slower part of the song with bass, but I made a newer guitar tone since then and re-recorded all the guitars, and didn't bother with bass simply because I knew I'd have to do it again really soon when I finish it anyway.

Thankyou for the kind words. I look forward to posting more rad stuff.

1. Yes, making sure you've got leads to plug guitars into the toneport and also a mic lead to plug a microphone into it.
2. Yea you can add lots of effects like phaser, chorus, delay, etc. all the regular guitar effects. I also add an overdrive pedal infront of my amps for a tonal variation.
3. I guess not?
4. Well you can theoretically get sounds like mine, but my tone sounds the way it does due to having 4 tracks of distorted guitars, trying to play a certain way, being compressed in 2 different ways an EQ'd in the mixing phase.

If you want to record metal, I definitely recommend getting the metalshop pack. You think you can get away with the regular tones, and I thought I could for a while, but then I got the metalshop pack and instantly all my other tones became inferior to my new ones.

It really depends what type of sound you're after. It has a 'treadplate' model which is a modeller or a dual rectifier, a few models that replicate JCM900 marshalls, a 'slo-100' which models soldano heads and then a few ones line6 made up themselves. When I didn't have the metalshop packs I used to use either the tradplate, slo-100 or the spinal puppet. I found some patches created by a guy at another forum using the soldano model for rhythms (this is a benchmark amp for lead tones so I was quite surprised) and they sounded cool.

With the metalshop pack you get many more line 6 made up ones (big bottom probably being most popular) along with ones that model ubershalls, XTC's, engl powerballs, peavey 6505's, marshall JCM2000's, mesa triple rectifier, deizhal, etc. I haven't found them to sound much like what they are modelling but you can get some WAY better sounds than you can without them.

Blimey-- Sky Of Maggots is awesome! Right up my street. Love the tone and the song.

vox could come down in sky of maggots and they could use a little low end. guitars could use a little low end and bass could come up.

Yeh the vox are definitely too loud in sky of maggots. I had them sitting good but I re-recorded everything with a different tone when I came up with new riffs and deleted the bass track (planned to do it again but forgot) and didn't touch the vocals. As i said, that recording isn't mixed as well as it could be but it's mainly due to the fact it's based on ideas rather than trying to be a finished product.

I appreciate your comments everyone. :)

The only thing that I noticed with Sky Of Maggots is that while the vocal seemed to be about right, when it first came in it really scared the shit outta me and I listen to this sort of music day in day out :)

Perhaps some reverse reverb or something to bring it in? :)

I loved Tollz and Sanitarium. Finally someone plays songs by my favourite band :P

Yeh.

I haven't listened to metallica for a while but ever since I thought about wanting to record I've wanted to cover plenty of their songs so I thought I'd give it a go inbetween playing death metal and writing death metal.

I'm glad you liked it.
