Newbie help?

Hi all,

Hoping you can help a newbie out. Let me know if anything below is unclear and I'll do my best to clarify.

Here's my gear list:
- Korg Triton Pro-X
- Akai MPD16 Midi drum pads
- Yamaha Motif ES Rack synth
- PC running Cakewalk Home Studio w/ M-Audio 2496 sound card

Here's what I'd like to do:
- Use both the Triton and the MPD16 to contol sounds from the Triton and Motif
- Use the PC as sequencer
- Use both the Triton and Motif as sound modules

Here are my questions:
- How do I hook up all this stuff to accomplish the above? Do I need a MIDI thu box or any other gear?
- How do I use both the Triton and Motif as sound modules in my sequencer software? E.g., if I record sixteen MIDI tracks with the Motif and want to add a track (#17) to play through the Triton, how do I tell the sequencer to send the MIDI messages to only the Triton (and not the Motif)

The AP2496 has one midi in/out,now you could use midi thru and connect eveything that way,but it would probably be easier to get a usb midi hub with more midi connections.

I used to have an AP2496 and a 2x2 USB midi box and that would definitely do the trick for you.

If HS is like SONAR which I use,all you need to do is assign each track to it's own output.You assign each input the same way.


I have a JV30 synth which I use solely as a controller,because I only use softsynths now,but back in the day I controled the sounds out of the synth and a Boss drum machine back into my computer.

The one problem you will have is mixing your synth outputs,do you have an idea how you will record the audio nto your computer seeing as you only have four inputs two of them being SPDIF?

These were the first two things that came to my mind. You can chain all your stuff together but i think you will be far happier with a midi patchbay.


If you use midi with your akai mpd, you need to put it at the beginning of the chain since it only has a midi out (i believe). Or you can use it USB and then be able to use it independantly of your synths. The advantage of this is that it can be easier to have two independant "chains". Especially if you are adding softsynths to the equation. You do have to send everything back to your synths with your midi out from your soundcard to trigger sounds, you may have latancy issues since you deal with latancy twice.





Soundcard, i don't think it will be very fun tracking out. I'd add a delta 1010lt to that. Or even another 2496. Then you have two spdif inputs, and an added benifit, more midi channels. It's more of a pain than a midi patch though depending on the program. In protools it worked fine for me as it's easily assignable. Then you have more I/O and more midi.
