Newbie - Audiophile USB with OS X

I was wondering if anyone has used this board with OS X? I must be missing something...

There's no input level controls in the Audiophile driver interface, and regardless of what software I'm using (Cubase SX, Deck 3.5, etc), I can't get a decent level, or anywhere near. The input signal is really weak.

I'm plugging guitars and basses directly in - I can get a good level this way with other cards....

How directly is directly? Using a preamp between the guitar/bass and the sound interface? Because you need one.
