Ok, basically Im looking to set up a kind of home studio on a £5,000 budget, maybe £6,000. I work mainly with rappers, and wont really be doing any instrument recording, mainly vocals, for now anyway. I want to use a Mac setup with Logic and a ProTools MBox...however I know very little about what equipment to buy. I can use an already set up studio lol, but dont know much about how to set one up myself. Could somebody please just tell me what essential equipment I need to fit my budget?

Thanks in advance!

i would recomend an imac. great bang for the buck. get at least 2gig of ram. i personally have a macbook pro. i needed the portability, and it has been VERY beneficial. also, i would shoot for the mbox 2 pro. you get more inputs, higher sample rates, lower latency, and wordclock. logic would definately be a good choice if you are working with rap artists. it comes with lots of softsynths. all you need is a cheap usb controller and you are good to go.

imac/macbookpro 2500 usd
mbox 2 pro (comes with pt le) 700 usd
logic (comes with tons of great softsynths) 1000 usd
maudio O2 25 note midi controller 100 usd
akg c414 microphone 1000 usd

My obligatory standard reply that I keep in Wordpad:

First off, immediately get a good beginner recording book (spend $20 before spending hundred$/thousand$) that shows you what you need to get started and how to hook everything up in your studio:
Home Recording for Musicians by Jeff Strong - $15
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/07...ce&n=283155&n=507846&s=books&v=glance
(Wish I'd had that when I started; would have saved me lots of money and time and grief)

Plenty of software around to record for free to start out on:

Audacity: http://audacity.sourceforge.net

Kristal: http://www.kreatives.org/kristal/

Other freebies and shareware: www.hitsquad.com

Another great option is REAPER at http://www.cockos.com/reaper/
(It's $40 but runs for free until you get guilty enough to pay for it...)

Music Notation and MIDI recording: Melody Assistant ($20) and Harmony Assistant ($80) have the power of $600 notation packages - http://myriad-online.com
Demo you can try on the website.

And you can go out to any Barnes&Noble or Borders and pick up "Computer Music" magazine - they have a full studio suite in every issue's DVD, including sequencers, plugins and tons of audio samples. (Last November, they gave away a full copy of SamplitudeV8SE worth $150 - pays to watch 'em for giveaways...)

yeah Zakos getting a console would really be rad with that 1 return on the Mbox. faders would be flying like crazy ^_^
