First up - Hi to everyone, well as title says ... Newbi .... have just signed up after searching (with no luck) the net for so long to find answer to problem I,m having.
I am very new to home recording, computers etc, I play guitar a friend gave me some items, mbox, monitors, so I decided to spend some cash on other items for home recording, my set up is
Guitar
iMac {Lion} running Logic Express
Mbox 2
Axiom Pro Midi Key Board
Boss RC 300 Loop Station
Yamaha Monitors
? What I'm trying to do is - have all connected, all working together, so I can open logic, play midi keyboard (and notes played store/record onto the Boss RC 300 to use as loops} have my guitar also plugged into the Boss to do the same, also like to use logic to record.
I have at this stage got my guitar into boss rc connected to mbox which is connected to imac and have logic open using guitar effects, so this seems to be working so far, but now I also want to use my midi keyboard to do the same but also to record the keyboard onto the boss when I hit the record pedal.
I really hope someone can help me out ....... that is if any of the above makes sense, please ask me if you need more info or for me to try and explain again... Thanks

First off, Welcome.

I'm not familiar with most everything you've got there, but one thing I noted was using the Axiom to record into you loop station. The keyboard only sends out midi data, not audio. You'll need a virtual instrument (VSTi) also called SoftSynth to convert the midi data to audio inside your computer. Then you can run it out to your loop station. I see the loop station has midi in/out/thru, but for sure that's only to use midi as a controller and not for processing music, so probably plugging the axiom straight into the loop station won't do you any good.

Not sure why you want to record into the looper if you have Logic; except maybe to use at a live performance.

hth,

Hi Chili, thanks for your reply and help, I will look at virtual instrument (VSTi) SoftSynth. Yes I tried plugging axiom straight into looper, no good, no sound.
Being new to software, midi and all that, maybe I just need to get my head around it, as what I think maybe impossible or as you mention at the end why use the looper if I have logic, as no I wont use any loops etc for live, just for home practice and ideas.
Thanks again

I know not of mac/Logic so I can only give a little help with the external setup.

You want to run the Axiom into the Boss? Well you can't. The Axiom is just a MIDI controller and does not produce any audio.

To get keyboard audio you need to be running synth software on the mac and then taking a feed from the Mbox 2 output to the Boss. However the only outputs from the Mbox are tied up feeding the Yammies! There are several options.

Pinch the output temporarily and run on headphones.
Use the headphone out to feed the Boss (AUX input)
Split (parallel) the Mbox output
Buy a small mixer to take the Mbox out and then this should give you at least one extra, controlable output.

But then I am far from sure that the system will allow you to run a synth, feed the Boss AND record the resultant! I am pretty sure I could do it with a PC, a 2496 and Samplitude but as I say, I know not of macs and Logic.

Dave.

What is it you're trying to achieve via the looper?

I use a Boss looper for live performance and apart from the reverse function, haven't ever used it for recording, so I'm curious as to what you're trying to do?

Hi Dave and thanks for reply, Chili mentioned running synth software also, do you know a good one to use, and thanks for the external info, I like the idea - Use the headphone out to feed the Boss (AUX input) this may work, maybe I do need to update the mbox, not sure.

Indeed I am curious too! I think the OP will result in a huge feedback loop. Keep the wick down chap!

Hi Armistice
Its not so much to record, I am wanting to use my midi keyboard with the boss rc 300, in the same way as plugging my guitar in, its just getting the midi sound from the computer to the boss, as that is what I believe I am learning so far from this thread.
Thanks

Coolio kodak... you've just given me a thought that I can use one of my keyboards to put in some backing for some of our live songs... never thought of that before...

Ah! I see. Well I still think a wee mixer is your best buy for such experimentation with audio routing.
If the Mbox is satisfactory in most other respects, latency, number of inouts etc, then I see no reason to change it, not at this stage anyway.

Re synth software there is a shedload of free stuff, mostly I think for PC but mac as well. I guess Garage Band has an equivalent to Msofts Wavetable Synth? I hope it is a LOT better!

Cubase is the recognized dog's whatsits for MIDI and has Halion. You can download a free trial of the lite version.

Man what a buzz ...... no it was not from feed back ....... but a buzz giving you a inspirational idea Armistice, but I guess helping someone out once still makes me a newbi, and still working on my set up.

I have a friend who does the same with his looper - he records the whole backing track first (doesn't matter what DAW), renders/mixes it down to a mono track (he uses mono PA), then feeds the audio out from his interface to the looper, loading in each song individually.

To make the axiom record midi (using a soft synth in your daw) you would need to connect the axion to the mbox via the midi in / out .
You could render the midi track you just recorded to audio after within the daw.
remember that the axiom midi out goes to the mbox midi in and vise versa.
Perhaps you got that already, just trying to help

The Axiom has a usb port to connect to a computer and in that instance is also becomes a MIDI interface using the DIN ports....At least that last is what I understand from the manual.
